# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Barrows: Why It Happens

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then put this page down a moment, leave your ignition and engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a thorough flush, carried out just where your car sits around Barrows, is normally what it takes if found before your motor runs.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Many modern diesels around Lippiatt, as well as Barrows, carry on two fluids; your engine takes just the diesel.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There's a filler for every tank.

Under one flap, side by side: that's the layout on a lot of motors. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Filling the diesel side at the petrol pump happens all the time.

The AdBlue side is filled far less commonly, usually from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

It is in the gap that the mistake lives.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank happen around Barrows?

It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Haste comes from the warning. The car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a drive off Barrows Road, or on the way home in the car park outside Kings Head.

The old car's cap is where your hand goes — but a hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That's the second thing: a strange motor.

A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after begun, keeps on.

It takes a few seconds, be it out in Hillfield or bang in the heart of Barrows.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Check these first, on a forecourt around Barrows or a drive over in Bradley Cross. Seconds, that's all.

- Check the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue ones are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually aren't.

- Plenty of vehicles fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Look inside your fuel flap: plenty of motors have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows which it is when the filler isn't next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Worle, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

Wherever in Somerset the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Pull in somewhere level, motor off, with time to spare — never rushing on the side of Greenhayes.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- The diesel cap stays on. When both share a flap, make sure it is closed before lifting the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the car, close the cap and check again that the diesel cap never opened off.

Find at the second or third stage that AdBlue went into the wrong tank? That's where you stop.

Do not go on to stage five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Barrows?

The short order of things, beginning with not starting your motor.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels as soon as the ignition is switched on — and so leave it off.

Topping up with diesel won't weaken it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the base of the tank, just where the fuel is taken from.

Ask the attendants to help roll your car clear of the pump if you're on a forecourt — the Murco, the BP or anywhere else.

At home around Barrows? So the vehicle remains where it is.

When the engine has been run by now, pull over safely then switch the vehicle off.

On the M5, under 5 miles from Barrows, that means the next junction.

About how far did it go? Crossing Barrows is less work than a trip of under 10 miles towards Wells, so tell us.

## Barrows: what happens when our engineers get there

Our technicians come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Cheddar First School, close to Church Hall or on your own drive.

Both the work and our quote rest on three answers — what fluid, which amount, and if it's run — so our technicians ask.

The price comes on the call, before any van leaves.

Your system is then purged thoroughly, once that tank is emptied.

Much more than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: crystals form, certain metals corrode, and none of that washes out unaided, however long it sits.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

After that we fire it up and check it runs smoothly before leaving.

Unrun vehicles usually mean a half-hour job after arrival. The equipment is fine on a busy filling station, and quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents your insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

It's worth checking your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.

## About Barrows itself

Barrows is a suburban area situated on the lakeside in Somerset, with a relatively low elevation of 22 metres. Barrows lies near several other small communities, including Hillfield and Hamfield, and is close to the historic city of Wells. Barrows has a population of around 3948 people, predominantly living in detached housing. Barrows is also within easy reach of the popular tourist destination of Cheddar.

## Barrows and Somerset: AdBlue drains across the area

Being a residential suburb, Barrows shares its vans nearby places — Hamfield, Cheddar — right through BS postcodes and the wider area beyond.

Give a postcode beginning BS27 3, and the van arrives fastest.

Moving the vehicle isn't needed.

Wherever it sits — beside Our Lady Queen of Apostles, on a lay-by heading to Hannah More Park, at home — that's where it gets drained.

If you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of Cheddar Valley Community Church, ring and ask rather than assuming.

## For Barrows motorists, the short version

Tip no AdBlue until you have read the cap.
