# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Barshare? Keep It Switched Off

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, keep your engine off then leave your ignition off.

In plain terms, AdBlue is just urea in water.

Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and nothing happens until the engine sucks it through.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Barshare, is usually what AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before the engine has been run.

No step comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

## Barshare, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do right away

Do:

- So no one can switch your ignition on, pull the keys out.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.

- Keep your receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what was put in and about how much.

- The van finds you fastest with a postcode starting KA18 1, or just the name of a street close by, and so phone from the spot.

Not to do:

- Don't start the motor, even for a moment to shift the vehicle.

- Your ignition stays off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to start the pump.

- Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Even a short stretch down Barshare Road is too far to drive it.

- Don't try to drain it yourself by the kerbside.

Rolling your car away from the pumps is a job for staff to help with, whichever Barshare forecourt you're on, the the nearest petrol station included.

At home, your car remains just where it is.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your engine.

Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it is fed into your exhaust, where it treats the fumes.

No part in an injection pump is designed for this liquid — and none of it was meant to go through one.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after tipped in, won't. The behaviour is nothing like fuel's.

It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from.

Once the pump runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to go through. Before then it sits underneath the diesel, and that is how a car filled in Logan yesterday and not switched on stays the simple case, provided no one turns your key.

It causes two kinds of harm from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that hardens in filter elements and narrow channels; and, because it attacks some metals, each part it reaches suffers for as long as it stays in there.

A motor left sitting around Barshare with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't.

The water in it does damage of its own: the high-pressure pump and the injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is regularly more major than petrol

A problem of thin fuel is what you get after fuelling a diesel with petrol at the JET.

No damage is done while it sits put, mixed into your diesel — only when the engine runs on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is simply the wrong one.

It does not burn, so it cannot simply be run through.

Whether your vehicle is in Holmhead or the heart of Barshare, firing it up "to see" costs more in this case than almost any other error, and the flush matters for more. The reasons: it won't remain mixed, and so diluting it fails; and crystals and corrosion outlast the next tankful.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Anywhere in East Ayrshire the vehicle has stopped, an unrun motor leaves the AdBlue still inside the reservoir: the simplest part of a fuel system to clear.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Barshare: how it ends up there

It's not on purpose. Plenty of cars keep the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel one, now and then under a single flap, and mixing them up is simple in poor light.

It mostly happens outside the house, from a bottle grabbed on the journey home, not at the filling station.

Mostly, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways.

Rushing, outside the local primary school, after a warning lamp flashed on during the school run, someone refills the car.

Close to Jubilee Court, a driver tips a container in on the drive after work.

One more pattern: darkness, the car park outside the pub in the village, and a driver using that flap the first time.

It comes up most in a rental, a brand-new car, a fleet motor, or the spare vehicle in a home with both fuels — the vehicles people use the least.

Keep it switched off: that is the first step to the same slip, wherever in Barshare or the rest of East Ayrshire you are.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Barshare, and the motor started?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank.

It has been drawn through the filter and the lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard lights or cutting out: any may show up, perhaps part way across Barshare or coming back from Shankston Wood.

Pull over when it is safe. Switch off. Leave the vehicle off rather than restarting it to check.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

Barshare sits under 25 miles from the M77; if you were on it, exit at the first junction and pull up safely rather than driving on.

A quick hop across Barshare to the car park by Townhead Park is one matter; driving towards Glasgow, under 50 miles away, is another, because each mile pushes the AdBlue further in. So mileage matters.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Once the engine has run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the car has stopped.

Long-term damage is very unusual when it is caught early.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Barshare?

We come to your car, wherever it has stopped in Barshare: a side street near Cumnock Library, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Which fluid was put in, about the quantity, and whether the motor has turned over: we check before all else, because those shape the job.

The polluted diesel and the urea come out together after the tank is emptied, on the spot.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush matters: the whole system is cleaned right through because what remains will not flush away by itself.

Clean diesel goes in after the filter is flushed — or swapped, if it needs to be — and after that the car is tested.

About half an hour on site is usual for most jobs when the engine has not run.

Our equipment is explosion-proof, so a busy forecourt is no problem, and it is quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Fresh diesel goes in to bleed your system, and that's the final step.

You set off as soon as our technicians have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a driveway in Barshare or in a bay at Auchinleck.

The test before our technicians go is that it runs smoothly on new diesel.

No workshop is needed at any point, with the whole job done on the spot.

Your insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over once this job is done.

Close to a border, or anywhere tricky to explain? Asking beats guessing, and so phone.

## Barshare: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Since the callouts vary, a flat figure would not be honest.

Whether the engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what moves the price. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the location of your car, because an open drive is simpler for our van to get to safely than a tight space behind St John's RC Church.

That's why each call from Barshare starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and whether it has run.

The replies turn a range into a straight price.

Before a van heads out, you are told our price by phone. And you pay on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover comes with many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van gets there.
