# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Bassenhally Field: Why It Occurs

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and your ignition off and call 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when the engine has not run, it is drained and thoroughly rinsed where the car sits around Bassenhally Field.

Here before the event? Then what follows covers how it happens and how to stop it happening at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Not one fluid but two: that is what plenty of newer diesels around Bassenhally Field and Briggate run, with diesel feeding the engine.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, and there a spray treats the gas.

Every tank comes with a filler of its own.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Filling your diesel side at the petrol pump happens constantly.

The AdBlue side is filled far less frequently, usually from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

It is in the gap that the error happens.

## Bassenhally Field: how AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

Haste follows from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a driveway off Mallard Close, or heading home in the car park outside Straw Bear.

Then your car is new. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spouted bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after started, carries on.

Whittlesey or the middle of Bassenhally Field: it is the same few seconds either way.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in North Side or a forecourt around Bassenhally Field, check these. They take a few seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- On many vehicles, size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Look inside the fuel flap: many vehicles carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- Can't find it beside the diesel inlet? In that case look beneath the bonnet or in your boot — the handbook will say which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park at Whittlesea? Ask the person who drove the car last before leaving, rather than when the light goes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

The day the light comes on, anywhere in Cambridgeshire, follow this routine.

- Switch off once parked — level ground, engine off, and not in a rush beside Moreton Close at the roadside.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew it. It sounds silly. It works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the car, close the cap and check a second time that the diesel cap was never came off.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Don't go on to step five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Bassenhally Field?

Don't start the motor: that's how the short order of things starts.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels the moment your ignition goes on — and so leave it off.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

On a forecourt — BP, Esso or any other — the staff will usually help push your car clear, when you ask.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Bassenhally Field.

Where the motor has been run by now, pull over safely and switch the car off.

Leave the Great North Road — under 10 miles out of Bassenhally Field — at the next junction.

A short hop across Bassenhally Field is a smaller job than a run towards Peterborough, under 10 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## Our arrival around Bassenhally Field, and what takes place next

Anywhere your car has stopped, whether outside Alderman Jacobs School, near The Delph Boat or on your own drive, the van comes to it.

Both the work and the price rest on three replies — what liquid, which quantity, and if it has run — so our technicians ask.

You hear that price by phone, before anyone heads out.

Next: draining, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

After the filter is flushed — or replaced, if needed — fresh diesel is added, and then your car gets tested.

The motor is started next and checked to make sure it runs correctly, all before our technicians head off.

Unstarted vehicles usually mean a half-hour job from the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a busy filling station, and quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Before we get there, take a look at your insurance documents; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.
