# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Batchley: Why It Happens

Keep the motor and ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

In Batchley, finding it before your engine turns normally means draining and a thorough flush where it stands.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of newer diesels in Enfield, like those in Batchley, run on two fluids; the motor takes only your diesel.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, where a spray treats the fumes.

Each tank comes with one filler of its own.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is topped up at the pump all the time.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue normally comes out of a bottle, poured by a driver who has to stop and think which filler it needs.

Mistakes happen in that gap between them.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Batchley: how it happens

Carelessness rarely causes it. What does is three things coming up at once.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out completely, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Cherry Tree Walk before work, or in the car park outside The Queen's Head on the way home.

The old car's cap is where your hand goes — but a hire car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That's a second thing: an unfamiliar vehicle.

Nothing halts the pour once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it takes place in Southcrest or the middle of Batchley, it is the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Foxlydiate or a forecourt in Batchley.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Go by the cap, not its position.

- On plenty of cars, the size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Look inside the fuel flap: many vehicles have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler sits if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- The previous driver will know. Ask as you collect a hire car or company car — at Redditch's car park, say — rather than once the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

Anywhere across Worcestershire the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Willow Way.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew it. It seems daft. It does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the car on.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Before starting the car, close the cap and check a second time that the diesel cap never came off.

Spot at stage two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? Then stop just there.

Don't go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Batchley?

Brief list, then. Top of it: your motor stays unstarted.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — so keep it off.

Diluting it with extra diesel fails, since AdBlue sinks to the bottom instead of blending — and that is where the fuel is pulled from.

Ask the staff to help roll your car away from the petrol pump if you are at a forecourt — the the nearest petrol station, the BP or somewhere else.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Batchley.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the motor has already run.

The next junction means the place to come off when you're on the M42, under 5 miles from Batchley.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Birmingham, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Batchley.

## What takes place when our engineers get there in Batchley

The van reaches the vehicle anywhere it has come to rest — your own drive, beside Batchley Community Centre, or outside Batchley First and Nursery School.

The replies determine the work and our price, so our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and if it has run.

On the phone call itself, you are told our price — ahead of anything else.

Emptying your tank comes next, then a full flush of the fuel system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Before leaving, our technicians start the car and confirm that it is running correctly.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour once we get there, provided the motor has not run — and the pumps our technicians use are fine on a live forecourt and quiet after dark beside a house.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork your insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Before we get there, have a look at your policy; plenty include cover for misfuelling.

## AdBlue drains across Worcestershire, Batchley included

As a residential suburb, Batchley shares its vans nearby places — Webheath, Redditch — all the way across B postcodes and the surrounding area around them.

Fastest of all: give a B97 4 postcode for our van.

Your car does not need to move.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to HDA Sports and Social Club, a side street near Holmwood House: our engineers drain the car where it stands.

Ring and ask rather than guessing if you're close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Redditch United FC.

## In short, for Batchley people

Tip no AdBlue until you've read the cap.

Still AdBlue in the diesel tank? Petrol in Diesel can drain it wherever it is, anywhere around Worcestershire: keep the car off then ring 0333 366 0103.
