# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Bathwick: Why It Occurs

Keep your motor and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Normally, if your engine hasn't turned, it's emptied and fully flushed where your car sits in Bathwick.

Not happened yet? Further down, the page explains the reasons it takes place and the ways to prevent it for good.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Many modern diesels on the roads about Bathwick and Lyncombe Hill carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, where a spray treats the gas.

Separate tanks, separate fillers.

Plenty of cars have a single flap for both, while others move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue normally comes from a bottle, tipped by someone who must stop and think which filler to use.

It's in that gap that the error lives.

## Bathwick: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a drive off Bathwick Hill before work, or in the car park outside The Royal Oak on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car tells you, and if it's empty, limp mode kicks in.

Unfamiliar cars are next, too. Rentals, new motors and company cars put their fillers differently, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after begun, carries on.

It's a few seconds, be it in Dolemeads or bang in the heart of Bathwick.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A couple of seconds is all these take — so check them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Walcot or a forecourt around Bathwick.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- On plenty of cars, size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Check inside your fuel flap: plenty of vehicles have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by your diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Bath Spa.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

When the light goes on, wherever in Somerset, follow this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of Darlington Place, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park then switch off first.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, perhaps, yet it does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where both share a flap, make sure it is shut before the bottle comes up.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Spot at stage two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? So stop just there.

Don't go on to step five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Bathwick?

The short order of things, beginning with no starting the engine.

Leave the ignition off too, because on many diesels it alone starts your fuel pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is drawn from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

At a forecourt — Esso, Sainsbury's or any other — the staff will usually help push the vehicle clear, when you ask.

At home around Bathwick? So the vehicle remains where it is.

Already started? Stop when it is sensible, then turn off.

On the M4, under 10 miles from Bathwick, that means the next exit.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Bathwick is less a job than a trip of under a mile to Bath, and so tell us.

## What occurs when our technicians turn up around Bathwick

Outside Widcombe CofE Junior School, close to Saint Mary's Bathwick or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, our technicians come to it.

Those replies settle this work and the price, and so our technicians ask what was put in, about how much, and if it has run.

During the phone call itself, you hear our price — ahead of anything else.

The fuel system is then flushed thoroughly, after that tank is emptied.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and neither washes out unaided. Hence it counts more.

The filter cleaned or, if it must be, swapped; clean diesel in; and then a test of your car.

We don't go until it has been started and is running correctly.

Unstarted cars usually mean a half-hour job from the moment we arrive. The kit is fine on a busy forecourt, and hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

Before we get there, take a look at your insurance documents; many carry cover for misfuelling.

Bathwick is characterized by a high proportion of flat dwellings, reflecting its urban setting. Bathwick is close to nearby places such as Dolemeads, Widcombe, and the city centre of Bath.

## AdBlue drains across Somerset, Bathwick included

Being a residential suburb, Bathwick has the same vans as nearby areas — Bath, Widcombe — all the way through BA postcodes and the wider area around them.

A postcode starting BA2 6 gets the van to you fastest.

The vehicle doesn't need to shift.

Anywhere it sits — beside Avon Probabation Service, on a layby heading to Bath Bowling Club, at home — that is where it is emptied.

If you're close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Bath Magistrates', County and Family Court, ring and ask rather than assuming.

## In short, for Bathwick people

Pour no AdBlue till you have read the cap.

AdBlue in your diesel tank regardless? Leave the car off and phone 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, throughout Somerset.
