# Battlefield: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, leave your engine off then leave the ignition off.

Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is.

It does not burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when the fuel system pulls it in.

If the engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually emptied and carefully cleaned where the car stands around Battlefield.

First, call us on 0333 366 0103.

## Battlefield, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do right away

To do:

- So nobody can switch the ignition on, take the keys out.

- Near moving traffic? So put your hazards on.

- So you can give us which fluid it was and roughly what quantity, save the receipt or the empty bottle.

- The van finds you fastest with a postcode starting G42 9, or simply the name of a street nearby, and so phone from the spot.

Not to do:

- No starting the engine — not for a second, not to reposition the vehicle.

- Don't switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- No more fuel on top. The AdBlue won't mix, so it is pointless.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short way down Braemar Street.

- Emptying that tank yourself beside the road isn't worth trying.

The attendants working at any Battlefield filling station — the BP among them — will usually lend a hand rolling it clear if you ask.

On your own driveway, do not move it at all.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in your motor.

From a dedicated reservoir it is fed directly to the exhaust, treating what your motor emits.

Nothing inside an injection pump is made for this liquid — and none of that was meant to go through one.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

Denser than diesel, it drops and pools underneath it — the same spot the pickup draws from.

A car topped up on a driveway in Crosshill overnight and left unstarted counts as the simple case. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up so far — but once your engine turns, that is what goes first, straight from the bottom of your tank.

It causes two kinds of damage from there.

It attacks certain metals used in fuel components, attacking any part it reaches till it is cleared from the system. And once the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that block filters and settle in tiny passages.

A motor left sitting around Battlefield with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't.

Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and every injector depend on diesel running through them, and so the water content damages them in its own right.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more serious than petrol

A fault of thin fuel is what you end up with from filling a diesel with petrol from the Morrisons.

No damage is done as long as it stays put, mixed into your diesel — only once the engine works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether.

Not burning, it cannot simply be run through.

Whether the car sits in Shawlands or the heart of Battlefield, turning it over "to see" costs more with AdBlue than almost any other mistake, and the flush counts for more. Why: it will not stay blended, and so diluting it is impossible; and deposits and corrosion outlast the following tankful.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

If your engine has not run, the AdBlue is still inside that tank, and that tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Glasgow City your car is sitting.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Battlefield

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, now and then under a single flap — may appear the same. Nobody intends it; plenty of layouts invite it.

It mostly occurs outside the house, from a bottle bought on the journey home, rather than at the forecourt.

It tends to take place in a few familiar ways.

Hurrying, outside the local primary school, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, a parent tops up the vehicle.

After work, a container goes in on a drive close to Sinclair Drive.

Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap refills the car in dim light, parked in the car park outside Armstrong's.

It crops up most in a rental, a new vehicle, a company car, or the other vehicle of a home with one of each fuels — the vehicles drivers know least.

An identical slip, same first response — keep it switched off — wherever you are around Battlefield or the remainder of Glasgow City.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Battlefield, and the engine started?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in that tank.

It has been sucked through the fuel filter and the lines, and if the motor ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors.

Rough running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard lights or cutting out: any might show up, maybe midway across Battlefield or coming back from Langside Park.

Pull over when safe. Switch off. Leave it off rather than restarting it to check.

With each start, more of that is pulled through.

On the M74, under 3 miles from Battlefield, the next junction is where to exit, and anywhere sensible is where to park — not carrying on.

Mileage matters: each mile carries the AdBlue deeper in, so heading for Glasgow, under 3 miles away, makes a much larger job than crossing Battlefield to the car park by Langside Parish Church.

Tell us about how far it had come.

Once the motor has been started, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where your car has come to a stop.

Caught soon, it very seldom leaves lasting damage.

## Draining AdBlue in a diesel around Battlefield: what it takes

We come to your car, wherever it has stopped around Battlefield: a side street close to Glasgow South Christadelphian Church, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Which fluid got in, about how much, plus if your engine has been run: we ask first, because those shape the work.

On the spot, that tank is then drained, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea come out as one.

With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing matters: the fuel system is cleaned all the way through since residue won't flush away unaided.

Clean diesel goes in once your filter is flushed — or swapped, if it needs to be — and after that the vehicle is tested.

Not run? Then count on roughly half an hour once we are there for most jobs.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt safe to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

Bleeding your system with fresh diesel comes at the end.

You set off as soon as our engineers have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a driveway in Battlefield or in a bay at Mount Florida.

Before we leave, our engineers make sure it's running smoothly with new diesel in.

Our engineers do it all wherever the car has stopped, and it never has to be taken to a workshop.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later, which is what insurers want.

## About Battlefield

Battlefield is a suburban area in Glasgow City, situated near the River Cart and close to the city centre. Battlefield sits at an elevation of around 25 metres, with views of the surrounding cityscape. Battlefield is characterised by its predominantly flat-type housing, which accommodates a population of approximately 11,345 residents. Battlefield is located near other suburban areas, including Langside, Queens Park, and Mount Florida.

## AdBlue drains across Battlefield and Glasgow City

Langside, Queens Park and Mount Florida are among the towns around Battlefield that the same teams reach, along with much of Glasgow City further out, throughout the G postcode area.

Phone and ask rather than guess when you're by a border, or somewhere awkward to explain.

Battlefield is a residential suburb, and a call-out drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our technicians drain it where it stands, so it never needs to be moved to us.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Battlefield: the cost of fixing it

Since the callouts differ, a single figure wouldn't be fair.

What shifts the price is, first of all, whether your engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and finally where the car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight gap behind Langside Library.

Before any quote, not after, each call from Battlefield opens with three questions: the liquid, the quantity, plus if it ran.

Their answers shrink a range right down to one number.

You hear that quote by phone, before anyone sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

As our engineer is on the way, check your insurance: plenty include misfuelling.

## In Battlefield and still alongside your car?

Right now, the most helpful thing to do with the car is to not touch it.

Keys out, motor off, ignition off.

Petrol in Diesel takes over the rest, across Battlefield or anywhere in Glasgow City, after you call 0333 366 0103 saying it's AdBlue, roughly what quantity, and if the engine ran.
