# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Beachlands? Don't Start It

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave the motor off — and the ignition too.

Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue.

Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and nothing starts until your engine sucks it through.

In Beachlands, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before your motor runs usually means a drain and a thorough flush, just where the car is.

Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

## What to do straight away, Beachlands: AdBlue in the diesel tank

Do these:

- So nobody can switch your ignition on, take your keys out.

- Near moving traffic? So put the hazards on.

- Which product, and roughly what volume? Hang on to the bottle or the receipt, and our technicians will know.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting BN24 6, or the name of the nearest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

- Not even briefly, and not to shift the car: your engine remains off.

- Do not switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Even a short stretch along Coast Road is too far to drive the car.

- No emptying it yourself, at all, at the roadside.

Moving the vehicle off the island is a job for staff to help with, whichever Beachlands forecourt you are on, the BP included.

On your own drive, don't touch it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

From a separate reservoir it goes directly to the exhaust, cleaning what your engine lets out.

Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

It doesn't combine. After it's poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves not at all like fuel.

It drops, because it is heavier than diesel, and pools low where the pickup takes its supply from.

The first thing the system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Westham last night, and has not been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

Two kinds of damage come from there.

What remains once the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in tiny channels and block filters. Worse, it eats at some metals in the fuel system, and carries on till it is flushed out.

Where the AdBlue has reached the pipework, leaving it overnight around Beachlands makes it worse. In that tank only, time does nothing.

And there is the water: it offers no protection to the parts that rely on it most — the injection pump and each injector.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more major than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol in error at the Asda, and the problem is thinned fuel.

Mixed through the diesel and sitting still, it is no threat for now; using your engine does the harm.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally wrong substance.

Since it does not burn, running it through is not an option.

Crystals and corrosion remain through the next tankful, and AdBlue splits back out of your diesel, so watering it can't work. That is why the flush counts more, and turning your key "to see" does more harm here than nearly any other mistake — in Crumbles or the heart of Beachlands alike.

As with petrol, there's good news.

Not run? Then the AdBlue sits just in the tank, the simplest section of the whole system to empty, anywhere your vehicle has come to rest across East Sussex.

## Beachlands: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It is not on purpose. Many cars keep the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel one, occasionally behind one flap, and muddling them up is easy in poor light.

A container picked up when heading home and tipped in outside the house, rather than at the forecourt, is the usual route.

The ways it takes place are few and familiar.

Hurrying, outside Pevensey and Westham CofE Primary School, after a warning light came on during the school run, a parent refills the vehicle.

In the evening, a container goes in on a driveway near South Close.

Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park outside Castle Inn, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

It happens most in the vehicles people know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Keep it switched off: that's the first response to an identical mistake, anywhere around Beachlands or the remainder of East Sussex you happen to be.

## Beachlands: started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank.

Given any running time, it travels to the injection pump and every injector, after passing via your filter and pipework.

Lumpy running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard lights or stalling: each may appear, perhaps midway across Beachlands or returning from Pevensey Recreation and Sports Ground.

Pull over when it is safe. Turn off. Leave it off instead of restarting it to check.

Each start pulls more of it through.

If you were on the M23, under 50 miles from Beachlands, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Beachlands to the car park by Ethel Wood Community Centre is a very different job from a run towards Brighton and Hove, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with each mile.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the motor has been started, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has stopped.

Noticed early, it very seldom leaves permanent damage.

## Draining AdBlue in a diesel in Beachlands: what it takes

Wherever it has stopped around Beachlands — a forecourt, a layby, a drive, a road beside Pevensey Baptist Church — our van comes to the vehicle.

Before anything else our technicians ask what was put in, about how much, and whether your engine has been run, because those replies settle the work.

Next, emptying your tank right there removes the contaminated diesel along with the AdBlue together.

Your system is cleaned thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

Clean diesel goes in once the filter is cleaned — or replaced, when it needs to be — and after that your car is tested.

If the motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once our technicians are there.

Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

The last step is to prime your system on fresh diesel.

Firing it up comes next, and then you set off from where the vehicle is parked, by Pevensey Bay or on a driveway around Beachlands.

It is checked on fresh diesel to make sure it runs correctly before our engineers go.

The whole job is done where your car is, so it never has to go to a garage.

At the end, you are given the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

## About Beachlands

Beachlands is a small coastal suburban area in East Sussex, situated near Pevensey Bay and Normans Bay. Beachlands has a low elevation of around 3 metres, reflecting its seaside location. Beachlands is characterized by its semi-detached housing stock and is located approximately 22 miles from Brighton and Hove. Beachlands is also within commuting distance of London, being around 52 miles from the capital.

## AdBlue drains around Beachlands and across East Sussex

The teams that answer AdBlue jobs around Beachlands also cover the locations around it, Pevensey Bay, Pevensey and Normans Bay among them, and most of East Sussex beyond, across the BN postcode area.

If you are near a border, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask instead of guessing.

A van that comes to you fits Beachlands, a residential suburb: you have no need to take the vehicle to us, since our engineers drain it on the spot, in a drive, a residential street, a car park or a filling station.

## Beachlands: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Since the callouts vary, a single price would not be honest.

Three things change the price: whether the motor has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where the car is. That last one comes down to whether a van can get to it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight spot behind St Wilfrid's Church Pevensey Bay.

Ahead of any quote, not afterwards, every call from Beachlands begins with the same three checks: the fuel, the quantity, and if the engine ran.

Those replies narrow the range down to a single figure.

Before a van heads out, you are told the price by phone. And payment is on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing in advance.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

## In Beachlands and still alongside the car?

Not touching your car is, then, the best thing you can do.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Petrol in Diesel takes over the rest, in Beachlands or anywhere within East Sussex, once you phone 0333 366 0103 saying it was AdBlue, about how big an amount, and whether it ran.
