# Why It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Bebington

Pause reading for a moment when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the motor runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Bebington.

The rest of this page explains why it happens and how to ensure it does not — useful if you are reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

No single liquid but two: that's how plenty of newer diesels near Bebington and Eastham run, with diesel feeding the motor.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.

Each tank comes with one filler of its own.

Many of vehicles have a single flap for both, while others put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is topped up at the pump all the time.

Much less commonly, the AdBlue side gets filled — normally from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

It is in the gap that the mistake happens.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place around Bebington

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

On a driveway off The Cross before work, or in the car park at The Royal Oak heading home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car warns you, and once it's gone, limp mode follows.

Then the vehicle is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Bebington or out in Bromborough.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Poulton or a forecourt around Bebington, check these. They take a few seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally isn't. Read it rather than going by position.

- Many cars give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Look inside your fuel flap: plenty of cars carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler is if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Bromborough Rake.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

For the day the warning appears — wherever you are around Merseyside — a routine to use.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Bromborough Village Road.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap does the trick — after you have located the filler and read it.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Only then, start the car: close the cap, check again, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Do not go on to stage five.

## Bebington: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Brief order, then. Top of that: your motor remains unstarted.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels as soon as the ignition goes on — and so leave it off.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is drawn from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it is the BP or the Texaco, ask the staff to help push the car away from the pump.

On your own drive around Bebington? So the car remains put.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the motor has already run.

On the M53, under 3 miles from Bebington, that means the next junction.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Bebington is less a job than a run of under 10 miles to Liverpool, so tell us.

## When we arrive around Bebington, what happens?

By Co-op Academy Woodslee, close to Saint Barnabas's Church or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, our technicians come to it.

We ask what got in, roughly how much, and if it has run, since those answers determine this work and the quote.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anybody heads out.

Emptying the tank comes next, then a thorough flush of the system.

More than with petrol, it matters here: crystals form, certain metals corrode, and nothing washes out unaided, no matter how long it sits.

After the fuel filter has been flushed — or renewed, if needed — clean diesel goes in, and finally the car gets tested.

We don't go until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

If the engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

It is worth checking your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.
