# How It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Beckwithshaw

Stop here for a moment when your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if the engine has not run, it is emptied and thoroughly purged where your vehicle is around Beckwithshaw.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Many newer diesels in Harlow Hill, as well as Beckwithshaw, run on two fluids; your motor takes just the diesel.

Your exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the fumes to fresh them, from a separate tank.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

At the petrol pump, your diesel side gets filled all the time.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less frequently.

Mistakes happen in that gap between the two.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Beckwithshaw: how it takes place

It is seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the car, and running out leads to limp mode — so a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Leathley Lane, perhaps outside Smiths Arms on the way home after work.

Then your car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Third, the spout fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in just as easily, and once the pour begins, no part stops it.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Beckwithshaw or out in Beckwith.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

A few seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Harlow Carr or a forecourt around Beckwithshaw.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Go by the cap, not its position.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of motors, the AdBlue one.

- Look inside the fuel flap: many vehicles have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- Can't find it beside your diesel filler? Then look beneath the bonnet or inside the boot — the handbook says where.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Pannal.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

On the day the light appears — anywhere it is in North Yorkshire — a simple routine to use.

- Switch off after you park — level ground, engine off, and not rushed by B6061 on the verge.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, perhaps, yet it does the trick.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, and check again — confirm your diesel cap remained closed throughout. After that, start the vehicle.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Leave out step five altogether.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Beckwithshaw?

Short order, then. Top of that: the engine remains unstarted.

Keep the ignition off too, because on many diesels it by itself starts the fuel pump.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

The staff at BP, Shell or any forecourt will normally lend a hand to push your car clear if asked.

If you're on your own driveway around Beckwithshaw, leave it where it is.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

The next exit is where to come off when you're on the A1(M), under 10 miles from Beckwithshaw.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Ripon, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Beckwithshaw.

## What takes place when our engineers turn up in Beckwithshaw

Our van comes to the vehicle anywhere it stopped — your own driveway, beside St Michael & All Angels, or outside Beckwithshaw Community Primary School.

Our technicians ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it has run, because the replies decide the work and our quote.

No one heads out before you've had the quote over the phone.

The fuel system is then flushed thoroughly, after that tank is emptied.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

Testing comes last: before that, clean diesel goes in, and your filter is cleaned or replaced as needed.

We don't go until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

Unstarted cars usually mean a half-hour job from arrival. The kit is safe on a busy filling station, and hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

The insurer will ask for the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

Ring and ask rather than assuming if you're near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Xylophone.
