# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Bedale

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does the motor.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

The trouble begins once it's pulled through your lines — it won't ignite, and it won't blend with diesel.

If the motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and thoroughly rinsed where the car stands in Bedale.

Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Bedale

Do these:

- So no one can switch your ignition on, take the keys out.

- Close to moving traffic? Then put the hazard lights on.

- Hold on to the till receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what was put in and roughly how much.

- The van locates you fastest with a postcode starting DL8 2, or just the name of a street nearby, and so call from the spot.

Never:

- No starting the engine — not briefly, not to shift the vehicle.

- Switching the key to ignition alone sets your pump running on many diesels. Avoid it.

- Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel; it separates out.

- Leave the vehicle where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short distance along South End.

- Beside the road, do not try draining it on your own.

Ask the attendants to help you roll the car off the pumps if you are at a forecourt around Bedale, whether it is the Shell or elsewhere.

At your own driveway, don't move it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not the engine but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs.

Stored in a separate tank, it's squirted into the exhaust stream to clean the fumes.

Not one side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and a pump can't take urea.

Poured in with your diesel, it keeps apart instead of blending — entirely unlike fuel.

The pickup sucks fuel from the deepest part of that tank, and that is precisely where AdBlue settles: as it is heavier than diesel, it sinks.

Simplest of all: one that had AdBlue in Leeming Bar overnight and has not been started since. The AdBlue sits at the foot of the tank, untouched — but it will be first through if your motor starts, before any diesel at all.

Two kinds of damage come from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps labouring on the parts it hits for as long as it stays there.

A vehicle left standing in Bedale with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't.

Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and each injector depend on diesel running through them, and so the water part damages them in its own right.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more major than petrol

Petrol put into a diesel on BP's forecourt leaves the fuel thin — that's the main problem.

Mixed through the diesel and sitting still, it's harmless for now; running the engine is the damage.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable liquid.

It can't just be run through, since it doesn't burn.

It does not stay mixed, so it cannot be diluted. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether your car is in Exelby or the middle of Bedale.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Not started? Then the AdBlue waits only in that tank, the simplest section of the whole system to clear, wherever your vehicle has come to rest in North Yorkshire.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Bedale: how it ends up there

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of vehicles sits right next to the diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Usually it is not the forecourt: a driver picks up a bottle heading home and tips it in at home.

Mostly, it takes place in one of a couple of familiar ways.

Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Bedale Church of England Primary School the top-up is hurried.

Close to Sussex Street, someone tips a bottle in at home in the evening.

Or someone unfamiliar with that flap refills the vehicle in dim light, parked in the car park outside White Bear.

It comes up the most in a hire car, a brand-new motor, a company motor, or the spare vehicle in a home with both fuels — the cars drivers know least.

Anywhere across North Yorkshire, Bedale as well, the slip doesn't change, and neither does the first step: leave it switched off.

## Started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Bedale?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank.

The fuel filter and lines have had it sucked through, and some running time takes it on to the high-pressure pump and every injector.

Lumpy running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: any may appear, perhaps midway across Bedale or returning from Bedale Golf Course.

No starting it again to check: pull over once safe, then turn everything off.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

On the A1(M), under 3 miles from Bedale, the next junction is where to exit, and anywhere sensible is where to park — not carrying on.

Hopping across Bedale to the car park by Beresford-Peirse Lodge No. 2610 is one thing; heading towards Ripon, under 15 miles away, is another, since each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. So distance counts.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

There's more to flush once the motor has been run, and our engineers do all of it where the car has stopped.

If it is caught quickly, lasting damage is very unusual.

## Bedale: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

A road beside Bedale Leech House, a drive, a layby or a forecourt: anywhere the car has stopped in Bedale, our engineers travel to it.

Before anything else our engineers ask what got in, roughly how much, and if the motor has been run, because those replies settle the work.

Right there, your tank is then emptied, and both the polluted diesel and the urea come out as one.

Your system is cleaned thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

Next, the fuel filter: flushed, or replaced when it has to be. After that fresh diesel, and then a check of your car.

About half an hour on site is usual for most jobs when your engine has not run.

Our equipment is explosion-proof, and so a live filling station is no fault, and it is quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Finally, your system is primed with new diesel.

You head off as soon as we have started the car, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a driveway in Bedale or in a space at Northallerton.

The test before we leave is that it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

Because the job is done in its entirety where the vehicle is, a workshop never comes into it.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers ask for.

## Bedale and North Yorkshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Our vans that answer AdBlue jobs around Bedale also cover the places round it, Aiskew, Firby and Kirkbridge among them, and most of North Yorkshire beyond, across the DL postcode area.

If you're close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask instead of guessing.

A van that comes to you suits Bedale, a riverside town: you have no need to take the car to us, since our engineers drain it there, on a driveway, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt.

## Bedale: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Because the jobs vary, a single price wouldn't be honest.

Three things shift the cost: whether your engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where the car is. That last one turns on whether a van can get to it safely, and an open driveway is easier than a tight space behind Market Cross.

Which fluid was put in, how much, plus whether the engine ran: every Bedale enquiry begins with precisely that, ahead of any figure, not afterwards.

When those are known, a range becomes one fixed number.

Our price is quoted during the call, before a van leaves; payment happens on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Check your policy whilst we are on the way: many include misfuelling cover.

## Bedale: still alongside the car?

Not touching the car is, right now, the best thing open to you.

Keys out; motor and ignition off.

Phone 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, the amount, plus whether it ran are all we ask. Petrol in Diesel handles the rest throughout North Yorkshire, Bedale included.
