# Bedlam: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case put this page aside for now, keep the ignition and motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Around Bedlam, finding it before your motor runs normally leaves draining and a thorough flush on the spot.

The rest of this page covers why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

No single liquid but two: that is what plenty of newer diesels near Bedlam and Silver Hill carry, with diesel for the motor.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust gas and cleans it.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

Other cars put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot more place both together behind one flap.

Filling the diesel side at the pump happens constantly.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less commonly.

It's in that gap that the error happens.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Bedlam: how it occurs

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

On a drive off Old Church Lane before work, or in the car park at The Pateley Club on the way home: that is where the rushed top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it is gone, limp mode follows.

Then the vehicle is strange. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and the hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

No part stops the pour once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It takes a few seconds, be it out in Pateley Bridge or bang in the centre of Bedlam.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Blazefield or a forecourt around Bedlam, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by position.

- Many cars fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on many vehicles. Look for it.

- Can't see it next to the diesel filler? In that case look below the bonnet or in the boot — the owner's manual says where.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Harrogate, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

When the light goes on, wherever across North Yorkshire, follow this routine.

- Turn off once parked — level ground, motor stopped, and not in a rush beside Springfield Way on the verge.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you have located your filler and read the cap.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Before starting the vehicle, shut the cap and look a second time that the diesel cap was never came off.

Find at step two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? So stop just there.

Don't go on to stage five.

## Bedlam: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Do not start the motor: that's where the short order of things begins.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the car on.

Filling up with diesel will not dilute it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the base of the tank, right where fuel is taken from.

Ask the staff to help push your car clear of the petrol pump if you're at a forecourt — the the nearest petrol station, the Independant or somewhere else.

Your own driveway around Bedlam is the place it stays.

Already started? Stop once it is sensible, then switch off.

Bedlam lies under 15 miles from the A1(M); on it, take the first junction.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Ripon, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Bedlam.

## Our arrival around Bedlam, and what happens next

We come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside St Cuthbert's Church of England Primary School, Pateley Bridge, near Pateley Bridge Methodist Church or on your own drive.

Both the work and the price depend on three replies — which liquid, what quantity, and whether it's run — so our engineers ask.

The price is given on the call, before any van leaves.

Then the tank is emptied and the system cleaned thoroughly.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Once your filter has been cleaned — or replaced, where required — fresh diesel is added, and finally your car gets tested.

The motor is started next and checked to be sure it runs correctly, all before our engineers leave.

Unrun vehicles mostly need a half-hour visit after arrival. The equipment is safe on a live forecourt, and hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Before we get there, have a look at your policy; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.

## Bedlam and North Yorkshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Bridgehouse Gate and Bewerley are among the places around Bedlam, a residential suburb, that the same teams cover, throughout HG postcodes.

Quote a postcode that starts HG3 5, and the van arrives fastest.

Moving the car is not needed.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street close to St Mary's Church, a lay-by on the way to Pateley Bridge Show Ground, a drive.

Guessing won't help at the back of Pateley Playhouse, on a border, or somewhere hard to describe; ring and ask.

## In short, for Bedlam people

Before you pour, read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere in North Yorkshire, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank anyway — so leave it off and phone 0333 366 0103.
