# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Bedminster Down: Why It Happens

Pause here for a moment when your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your motor runs, it is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Bedminster Down.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the page explains the why it happens and the how to prevent it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Plenty of modern diesels in Ashton Vale, like those in Bedminster Down, carry on two fluids; your motor takes only your diesel.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust gas to clean it.

Each tank has a filler of its own.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, the diesel side gets filled all the time.

The AdBlue side is filled far less often, normally from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

The error lives in that gap.

## Bedminster Down: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a drive off Banwell Close before work, or in the car park at The Maytree heading home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low the car warns you, and if it's gone, limp mode kicks in.

Then the vehicle is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Bedminster Down or out in Headley Park.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A few seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Bishopsworth or a forecourt around Bedminster Down.

- Position can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue caps are often blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually don't.

- On many motors, size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- Cannot find it next to your diesel inlet? In that case look below the bonnet or inside your boot — the handbook will say which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Parson Street? Check with the person who drove it last before leaving, rather than once the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

The day the light goes on, anywhere in Bristol, use this routine.

- Stop on level, motor off, with time in hand — not hurried on the side of Lulsgate Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the vehicle on.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, and look once more — making sure your diesel cap remained shut the whole time. After that, start the car.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Don't go on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Bedminster Down already?

Short list, then. Top of that: the engine stays unstarted.

Leave your ignition off as well, because on many diesels switching it on alone starts the pump.

Diluting it with more diesel won't work, since AdBlue sinks to the base instead of mixing — and that's where the fuel is pulled from.

On a forecourt — Esso, Texaco or another — the staff will usually help roll the car away, if you ask.

If you are on your own driveway in Bedminster Down, leave the car where it is.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

On the M32, under 5 miles from Bedminster Down, that means the next junction.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Bristol, under 3 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Bedminster Down.

## When our technicians get there around Bedminster Down, what takes place?

Our engineers come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Cheddar Grove Primary School, near St Oswald or on your own drive.

Both the work and the price rest on three answers — what fluid, what amount, and whether it's run — so we ask.

The price comes over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Next: draining, then a full flush of the entire system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

The engine is started next and checked to make sure it runs correctly, all before our technicians head off.

If the motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Nothing in advance; you settle up that day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

While we travel, have a look at your insurance documents; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.

Tip no AdBlue till you have read the cap.
