# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Beech Terrace

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, leave your engine off then leave your ignition off.

Urea mixed in water is what AdBlue is.

Being water-based, it won't burn and won't blend with diesel; damage just comes once your pump begins drawing it.

In Beech Terrace, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before the motor runs normally comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, just where your car is.

No step comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank in Beech Terrace

Things to do:

- Keys out — that way no one can power anything on.

- Near moving traffic? So put your hazards on.

- The empty bottle or your receipt tells us the product and the quantity, so do not bin it out.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting DL14 8, or the name of the nearest street, brings the van to you without a search.

Never:

- No starting your motor — not for a second, not to reposition the vehicle.

- Don't switch your ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- No more fuel added. The AdBlue won't blend, so it is pointless.

- Even a short stretch down Oxford Street is too far to drive it.

- Draining that tank yourself by the road is not one to try.

Ask the people behind the counter to help you roll the vehicle away from the island if you're on a forecourt in Beech Terrace, whether it is the JET or elsewhere.

If you are on your own drive, leave it just where it stands.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your engine.

Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it's sprayed into the exhaust, where it treats the gas.

A fuel pump is not made to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once tipped in, will not. The behaviour is not at all like fuel's.

It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from.

The first thing your fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Regent Street last night, and has not been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

From there it causes two kinds of damage.

It attacks some metals used in fuel systems, working on any part it touches until it is cleared from the system. And once the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and lodge in narrow channels.

Pipes carrying AdBlue mean harm overnight for a car sitting in Beech Terrace. Only in the tank, it stays stable.

Diesel protects the injection pump and every injector as it passes; water gives no lubrication, which is a second kind of damage.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger problem?

An issue of thinned fuel is what you get after fuelling a diesel with petrol at the Asda.

Mixed into the diesel and sitting still, it is no threat at that stage; running your motor is the damage.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally unsuitable substance.

Not burning, it cannot just be run through.

It doesn't stay mixed, so it cannot be diluted. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Gray Street or the middle of Beech Terrace.

As with petrol, there is good news.

Anywhere around Durham your vehicle has stopped, an unstarted motor leaves the AdBlue yet in the tank: the simplest part of any fuel system to empty.

## Beech Terrace: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many motors waits right next to the diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

It usually happens outside the house, from a container bought on the journey home, rather than at the forecourt.

Usually, it takes place in one of a few familiar ways.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Prince Bishops Community Primary School the top-up is hurried.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Wilson Street.

Otherwise, after dark outside The Red Alligator, the car is topped up by a driver using that flap the first time.

The least known cars see it most — hire cars, brand-new cars, fleet cars, and the spare motor of a home with both fuels.

Same slip, an identical first step — keep it switched off — wherever you are in Beech Terrace or the remainder of Durham.

## Beech Terrace: started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

With any running, it goes on to the injection pump and every injector, after passing via the filter and pipework.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard warnings or stalling: each may show up, perhaps midway across Beech Terrace or returning from Shildon Millennium Green.

Pull over when safe. Turn off. Leave the car off instead of restarting it to check.

Each start pulls more of it through.

On the A1(M), under 10 miles from Beech Terrace, the next junction is where to exit, and somewhere safe is where to park — not carrying on.

Every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. That is why a hop across Beech Terrace to park near The Valley Methodist Church and a drive of under 10 miles for Durham are such different jobs.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

There's more to flush once the motor has been run, and our engineers do all of it where your car has ended up.

Very seldom does it leave long-term damage when it's spotted soon.

## Emptying AdBlue in a diesel in Beech Terrace: what it takes

Wherever it has stopped around Beech Terrace — a forecourt, a lay-by, a driveway, a road beside St Mark's Church — our van comes to the vehicle.

The job rests on three answers, which our engineers ask for before all else — what was put in, the amount, and whether your engine has turned over.

Then that tank is drained where the vehicle stands, and so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

The fuel system is purged thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

Clean diesel goes in once the fuel filter is flushed — or swapped, if it needs to be — and then your vehicle is tested.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour visit once we turn up, provided your engine hasn't run.

Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Bleeding your system with clean diesel comes last.

You set off as soon as our engineers have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a drive in Beech Terrace or in a bay outside Bishop Auckland.

It is tested on fresh diesel to confirm it runs properly before our engineers leave.

Because the job is done in its entirety where the vehicle is, a workshop never comes into it.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers want.

No towing is needed. In Beech Terrace, a small village, a van that comes to you fits: your car is emptied where it stands, whether on a drive, a residential street, a parking area or a forecourt.

## Beech Terrace: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Not one flat figure would be fair, because each job is different.

The cost changes first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that went in. After that it turns on where the car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Eldon Community Centre.

Which fluid went in, what quantity, and if the engine ran: every Beech Terrace call begins with exactly that, before any figure, not afterwards.

Given them, the range narrows to a single fixed figure.

Priced by phone before the engineer heads out, it is settled on the day — card or phone, no deposit.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van gets there.
