# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Beechwood Gardens: How It Occurs and How to Stop It

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then put this page aside for now, keep the ignition and engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Beechwood Gardens.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Plenty of current diesels on the roads about Beechwood Gardens and Whoberley carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, and there a spray treats the gas.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the arrangement on many vehicles. On others, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Filling the diesel side at the petrol pump goes on all the time.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue normally goes in from a bottle, tipped by someone who must stop and think which filler it needs.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## Beechwood Gardens: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens

Carelessness rarely causes it. Instead is three things coming up at once.

On a drive off Lynbrook Road before work, or in the car park at Standard Triumph Recreation Club heading home: that's where the hurried top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car tells you, and if it's gone, limp mode kicks in.

Unfamiliar motors come second, as well. Hire cars, new vehicles and company cars put their fillers in new places, and the hand goes for the cap used on the old one.

Nothing halts the tip after it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It takes seconds, whether in Westwood Gardens or bang in the centre of Beechwood Gardens.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A few seconds is all these take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Canley or a forecourt in Beechwood Gardens.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- On plenty of cars, size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Check inside your fuel flap: plenty of cars have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by your diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Canley? Check with the person who drove the vehicle last before leaving, not once the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

The day the light goes on, anywhere across West Midlands, follow this routine.

- Pull in on level, engine off, with time to spare — not hurried on the side of Pilkington Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the car, close the cap and look a second time that the diesel cap never came off.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Do not go on to step five.

## Beechwood Gardens: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Brief list, then. First: the engine remains unstarted.

Keep the ignition off too, because on plenty of diesels switching it on alone starts your pump.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

The attendants at Esso, Costco or another forecourt will usually help to push your car away when you ask.

Your own driveway around Beechwood Gardens is the place it stays.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Beechwood Gardens sits under 5 miles from the M6; there, take the first junction.

Distance matters — a quick hop across Beechwood Gardens is a smaller job than heading under 3 miles to Coventry — so tell us about how far it went.

## When our engineers get there around Beechwood Gardens, what occurs?

By All Souls' Catholic Primary School, close to Parish Church of St Barbara, Earlsdon or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our engineers come to it.

What fluid went in, the quantity, and if it ran: we ask because those answers decide both work and quote.

During the call itself, you are told our price — ahead of dispatch.

Next: draining, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more here than with petrol.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

The engine is fired up next and tested to make sure it runs correctly, all before our technicians go.

Using pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where the motor has not run need roughly half an hour once we are there.

Nothing upfront; you settle up that day. At the end, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

While we travel, have a look at your insurance documents; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.
