# How It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Beeston Hill

Pause reading a minute when the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your motor runs, it is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Beeston Hill.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the page explains the why it happens and the how to prevent it for good.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Plenty of newer diesels in Hunslet Carr, like those in Beeston Hill, run on two liquids; the motor gets just your diesel.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel gets filled on each forecourt visit, again and again.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less often.

That gap is where the error lives.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Beeston Hill: how it happens

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the vehicle, and letting it run out means limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Dawson Road, or at Beeston Hill Social Club on the way home after work.

New-to-you vehicles come next, too. Rentals, new cars and company cars place their fillers in new places, and habit reaches for the cap used on the old one.

Third, the bottle fits: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in as readily, and once the tip begins, no part halts it.

Whether it happens in Islington or the middle of Beeston Hill, it is the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Whether a Beeston Hill forecourt or a driveway out in Beeston Park Side, spend a few seconds over these before any is poured in.

- Check the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue ones are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually aren't.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- Check inside the fuel flap: many cars have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- Cannot see it beside the diesel inlet? Then look beneath the bonnet or inside the boot — the handbook will say which.

- The previous driver will know. Ask as you collect a hire car or fleet car — from Leeds's car park, say — not once the warning comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

The day the light comes on, anywhere across West Yorkshire, follow this routine.

- Switch off once parked — level ground, engine off, and never rushed by Hardy View at the roadside.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew it. It sounds daft. It works.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.

- Stop when the tank fills or the bottle is empty; before that, tip slowly using its built-in spout.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Find at step two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? Then stop right there.

Don't go on to stage five.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Beeston Hill?

Brief list, then. Top of it: your engine stays unstarted.

Keep the ignition off as well, because on plenty of diesels switching it on alone starts the pump.

Thinning it with extra diesel won't work, because AdBlue sinks to the bottom instead of mixing — and that is where the fuel is drawn from.

Ask the staff to help roll the car clear of the pump if you are on a forecourt — the JET, the Shell or somewhere else.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around Beeston Hill.

Already started? Stop once it is sensible, then switch off.

The next exit is the place to leave when you are on the M621, under a mile from Beeston Hill.

About how far did it go? Crossing Beeston Hill is less a job than a trip of under 3 miles towards Leeds, and so say.

## What takes place when we get there in Beeston Hill

Our engineers come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Greenmount Primary School, near Kashmir Muslims Welfare Associatian Leeds or on your own driveway.

What fluid went in, the quantity, and whether it ran: our technicians ask because those answers decide both work and price.

During the call itself, you hear the price — ahead of anything else.

After that: draining, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

Much more than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: the crystals form, some metals corrode, and none of that clears away unaided, no matter how long it sits.

After the fuel filter is flushed — or replaced, where required — fresh diesel goes in, and then your car gets tested.

Before we go, our engineers start the engine and check that it's running correctly.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour once our engineers arrive, as long as your engine hasn't run — and the pumps we use are fine on a live forecourt yet quiet after dark outside a house.

Nothing in advance; you settle up on the day. At the end, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

## Beeston Hill and West Yorkshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Over LS postcodes, our teams that cover Beeston Hill — a residential suburb — work the nearby places too, Holbeck and Hunslet included.

Quote a postcode beginning LS11 6, and the van arrives fastest.

Shifting your car is not necessary.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street near South Leeds Al Noor, a lay-by on the way to Cross Flatts Park, a driveway.

Ring and ask rather than assuming if you're close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Abu Huraira Masjid.

## For Beeston Hill drivers, the short version

Tip no AdBlue till you've read the cap.

AdBlue in the diesel tank regardless? Leave it off then phone 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, across West Yorkshire.
