# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Belah: Why It Occurs and How to Prevent It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and the ignition off then call 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a thorough flush, done just where your vehicle stands around Belah, is usually all it needs when found before your engine runs.

Reading in advance? In that case the rest explains how it comes about and what to prevent it happening at all.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Many modern diesels in Knowefield, like those in Belah, carry on two fluids; the engine gets only your diesel.

The exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the fumes to clean them, from a separate tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

Many of cars have a single flap for both, while some put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time.

Much less commonly, the AdBlue side gets filled — mostly from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

The error lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank happen in Belah?

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Briar Bank before work, or in the car park outside Redferne Inn on the way home.

Next, your hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old vehicle — since a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one didn't.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

Whether it takes place in Etterby or the middle of Belah, it's the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Stanwix or a forecourt around Belah.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- On plenty of motors, the size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Look inside your fuel flap: many vehicles have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows which it is if your filler isn't next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- The previous driver knows. Check when you collect a hire car or company car — at Carlisle's car park, perhaps — not when the warning comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

For the day the warning appears — wherever it is in Cumbria — a simple routine to use.

- Not in a rush on the side of Fernlea Way, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park then switch off first.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew it. It seems daft. It does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Only then, start your car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Find during the second or third step that AdBlue went into the wrong filler? That is where you stop.

Don't go on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Belah already?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the motor.

Do not switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

The attendants at Morrisons, another forecourt nearby or another forecourt will normally lend a hand to push your car clear if you ask.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive around Belah.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the engine has already run.

Come off the M6 — under 3 miles out of Belah — at the first exit.

Mileage matters — a quick hop across Belah makes a smaller job than heading under 3 miles to Carlisle — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival in Belah, and what happens next

Our van reaches the car anywhere it stopped — your own drive, near St Mark's Church, or by Kingmoor Nursery and Infant School.

Our engineers ask what was put in, about how much, and whether it has run, because those answers settle this work and the quote.

On the call itself, you hear our quote — before dispatch.

Your system is then flushed thoroughly, after the tank is cleared.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of that clears away unaided. Hence it counts more.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

After that our engineers fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly before leaving.

Using pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your motor has not run take roughly half an hour once we arrive.

Nothing in advance; you settle up on the day. At the end, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

## About Belah itself

Belah is a suburban area located on the riverside in Cumbria, with an elevation of 23 metres, and is situated approximately 1.5 miles from Carlisle. Belah has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are the most predominant. Belah is close to nearby places such as Etterby and Edentown, and is part of the larger Carlisle urban area. Belah is about 262.6 miles from London, making it a relatively distant suburb from the capital city.

## Belah and Cumbria: AdBlue drains across the area

As a residential suburb, Belah shares its vans surrounding places — Edentown, Kingmoor House — right through CA postcodes and the surrounding area around them.

Fastest of all: quote a CA3 9 postcode for the van.

Your car stays put.

We drain it where it is — a side street close to The Belah Community Centre, a lay-by on the way to Lowry Hill Park, a drive.

Tricky to pin down, like the back of Stone Acorn? By a border? Checking beats assuming, so ring.

## For Belah drivers, the short version
