# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Bellingham: Why It Occurs and How to Avoid It

Keep your engine and ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103 now — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Normally, when your motor hasn't turned, it is emptied and thoroughly flushed where your vehicle is in Bellingham.

Here in advance? Then what follows explains why it happens and how to stop it happening at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel feeds the motor — but plenty of current diesels seen about Bellingham and Lower Sydenham hold a second liquid too.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust gas and cleans it.

Each tank has its own filler.

Many of cars share a single flap for both, while others move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel gets filled at each filling station visit, week in, week out.

The AdBlue side is filled far less regularly, usually from a bottle, and usually by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Bellingham: how it happens

Carelessness rarely causes it. What does is three things lining up together.

On a drive off King Alfred Avenue before work, or in the car park outside Railway Tavern heading home: that is where the rushed top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car warns you, and if it's empty, limp mode kicks in.

The old car's filler is where the hand goes — yet a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That is a second factor: a strange motor.

Lastly, the spout goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in just as easily, and once the pour begins, nothing stops it.

Whether it takes place in Bell Green or the middle of Bellingham, it is the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

A few seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Downham or a forecourt in Bellingham.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually isn't. Read it instead of going by position.

- Many vehicles fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler sits if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Lower Sydenham.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

When the light goes on, anywhere in Greater London, follow this routine.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Overdown Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where both share a flap, make sure it's closed before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the car, close the cap and check again that the diesel cap was never opened off.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Don't go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Bellingham?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the engine.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch it on.

Thinning it with more diesel won't work, since AdBlue settles to the bottom rather than mixing — and that's where the fuel is pulled from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it is the Sainsbury's or the BP, ask the staff to help push the vehicle clear of the pump.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway in Bellingham.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

The next junction means where to leave if you are on the M25, under 10 miles from Bellingham.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Bellingham is smaller work than a run of under 10 miles to London, so tell us.

## What takes place when our engineers arrive in Bellingham

Our van comes to the vehicle wherever it stopped — your own drive, near St Dunstan, or outside Elfrida Primary School.

Which liquid went in, the quantity, and whether it ran: our technicians ask since those replies decide both work and price.

During the call itself, you hear our quote — before anything else.

Draining your tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the fuel system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Filter flushed or, where it must be, swapped; clean diesel in; then a test of your car.

We do not go until it has been started and is running correctly.

If the engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

The insurer will ask for an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

## AdBlue drains across Greater London, Bellingham included

Being a residential suburb, Bellingham has the same vans as surrounding places — Southend, New Beckenham — right through SE postcodes and the wider area around them.

Quote a postcode beginning SE6 3, and the van arrives quickest.

No need to shift your car.

The drain takes place right there, whether a drive, a road by Bellingham Leisure Centre, or a lay-by towards Southend Park.

If you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Albacore Meeting Room, ring and ask rather than guessing.

## Bellingham motorists: the short version

Tip nothing until you've read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere around Greater London, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same — and so leave it off and call 0333 366 0103.
