# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Belliver: Why It Occurs

Leave the motor and ignition off and call 0333 366 0103 now — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Normally, when your engine has not run, it's emptied and thoroughly purged where your vehicle is in Belliver.

Not happened yet? Below, the page covers the reasons it occurs and the how to avoid it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

No single fluid but two: that is how plenty of modern diesels around Belliver and Bickleigh Down carry, with diesel for your engine.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, and there a spray treats the gas.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Filling the diesel side at the petrol pump goes on all the time.

Much less regularly, the AdBlue side is topped up — normally from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

The mistake grows in the gap between the two.

## Belliver: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Hessary Drive before work, or in the car park at Lopes Arms on the way home.

Then the vehicle is strange. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

Whether it takes place in Widewell or the middle of Belliver, it's the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Check these before pouring, on a forecourt in Belliver or a driveway out in Glenholt. Seconds, no more.

- Check the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue caps are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually aren't.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- Look inside your fuel flap: many vehicles carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler is not by your diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Whoever had it before will know. Check as you collect a rental or company car — at Bere Ferrers's car park, perhaps — rather than when the warning comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Devon that is.

- Pull in somewhere level, motor off, with time in hand — never hurried on the side of Staple Close.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you've found the filler and read it.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.

- Finish once that tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; until then, pour gently through the built-in spout.

- Before starting the vehicle, shut the cap and look again that the diesel cap was never opened off.

Find at stage two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? So stop just there.

Leave out stage five altogether.

## Belliver: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Short list, then. Top of it: the engine stays unstarted.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels as soon as the ignition is switched on — so leave it off.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is drawn from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

Ask the attendants to help push the car away from the pump if you're on a forecourt — the Tesco, the Texaco or anywhere else.

At home in Belliver? So your car remains where it is.

When the engine has run already, pull over somewhere safe and switch the vehicle off.

Belliver sits under 50 miles from the M5; there, use the next junction.

A short hop across Belliver is a smaller job than a run towards Plymouth, under 10 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival in Belliver, and what occurs next

We come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Bickleigh Down Church of England Primary School, near Roborough Village Hall or on your own drive.

Both the work and the quote depend on three answers — what fluid, which quantity, and if it has run — so we ask.

Nobody heads out before you have had our quote by phone.

The system is then purged thoroughly, after that tank is emptied.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

The filter flushed or, where needed, swapped; fresh diesel in; then a check of the vehicle.

Your engine is fired up next and checked to confirm it runs properly, all before our technicians leave.

Unrun vehicles mostly mean a half-hour job after arrival. The kit is fine on a busy filling station, and hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork your insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Before we get there, have a look at your insurance documents; many include cover for misfuelling.

## About Belliver itself

Belliver is a suburban area situated on the outskirts of Plymouth in Devon, with a mix of terraced housing and a population of around 2850 residents. Belliver sits approximately 158 metres above sea level, overlooking the coastal city of Plymouth, which is about 5 miles away. Belliver is close to nearby places such as Widewell, Woolwell, and Roborough, and is part of the larger Plymouth urban area. Belliver's location allows for easy access to the city's amenities and the surrounding South West region.

## AdBlue drains about Belliver, and Devon beyond

Throughout PL postcodes, our vans that cover Belliver — a residential suburb — work the surrounding locations too, Roborough and Woolwell included.

A postcode starting PL6 7 gets our van to you fastest.

Your car remains put.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street close to St Anne, a lay-by on the way to Beverston Big Park (Millennium Green), a drive.

Ring and ask instead of assuming if you're close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Church of the Holy Spirit.

## For Belliver motorists, the short version

Always, the cap; after that, the pour.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway, leave it off and call 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, anywhere across Devon.
