# Bellsmyre: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and the ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if the motor has not run, it's emptied and fully purged where the car is in Bellsmyre.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page explains the why it occurs and the how to avoid it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Many newer diesels on the roads around Bellsmyre and Dennystown carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, and there a spray cleans the fumes.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the layout on a lot of cars. On others, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less frequently, usually from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens around Bellsmyre

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

On a driveway off Lomond Drive before work, or in the car park at Brewers Fayre on the way home: that is where the hurried top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle warns you, and if it is empty, limp mode kicks in.

New-to-you vehicles come next, too. Rentals, new motors and company motors put their fillers in new places, and the hand goes for the cap used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Bellsmyre or out in Townend.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Be it a Bellsmyre forecourt or a driveway over in Kirktonhill, spend a few seconds over these before any goes in.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Go by the cap, not its position.

- Many cars give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- Cannot see it next to your diesel filler? In that case check below the bonnet or inside your boot — the handbook will say where.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Dumbarton Central.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

Anywhere around West Dunbartonshire the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Turn off after you park — flat ground, engine stopped, and not rushed beside St Andrew's Brae on the verge.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, perhaps, but it does the trick.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before starting your car, shut the cap and look a second time that your diesel cap was never opened off.

Spot at step two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? Then stop just there.

Don't carry on to stage five.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Bellsmyre?

Short order, then. Top of that: the motor stays off.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the vehicle on.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is drawn from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

At a forecourt — Esso, Murco or another — the staff will usually help roll the car away, when you ask.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway in Bellsmyre.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your motor has already run.

Come off the M8 — under 3 miles out of Bellsmyre — at the next exit.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Glasgow, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Bellsmyre.

## Bellsmyre: what happens when our engineers arrive

Anywhere the vehicle came to rest, be it outside the local primary school, beside Stag or on your own drive, our van comes to it.

Both the work and our quote rest on three replies — what fluid, what quantity, and whether it has run — so our technicians ask.

You hear that quote by phone, before anybody sets off.

Your system is then flushed thoroughly, once that tank is cleared.

More than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: the crystals build up, certain metals corrode, and none of that clears out unaided, however long it sits.

After the filter has been cleaned — or renewed, where required — fresh diesel is added, and finally the vehicle is tested.

Your engine is started next and checked to be sure it runs smoothly, all before we leave.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour after we arrive, provided the motor hasn't run — and the pumps our technicians use are fine on a live forecourt and quiet at night beside a house.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Misfuelling cover is included in many insurance policies — so make use of the wait to look at yours.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to Dumbarton Golf Club, a side street near St Peter's RC Church: our engineers drain the car where it stands.

If you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of War Memorial Fountain, ring and ask instead of guessing.

## In short, for Bellsmyre motorists

Tip nothing until you have read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, anywhere around West Dunbartonshire, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank anyway — so leave the vehicle off and phone 0333 366 0103.
