# How It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Belmont

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case put this page aside for now, keep your ignition and motor off, and call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your engine runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Belmont.

The rest of this page covers why it happens and how to make sure it does not — handy if you are reading before it has happened.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Many newer diesels on the roads around Belmont and Charlton carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own.

Plenty of motors share a single flap for both, while others put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up the diesel side at the petrol pump happens all the time.

Seldom filled, AdBlue normally goes in out of a bottle, tipped by a driver who has to stop and think which cap to use.

The error lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank occur around Belmont?

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

On a driveway off Camel Close before work, or in the car park outside The Lamb on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and once it's gone, limp mode follows.

The old car's filler is where your hand reaches — but a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That is the second thing: a strange vehicle.

A spout-topped bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after begun, keeps on.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Belmont or out in Wantage.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

A couple of seconds is all these take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Letcombe Regis or a forecourt in Belmont.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Trust the cap, not its position.

- Many vehicles give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Check inside your fuel flap: plenty of cars have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- Can't see it beside the diesel inlet? In that case look beneath the bonnet or inside your boot — the owner's manual says where.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Didcot Parkway.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

The day the light goes on, anywhere across Oxfordshire, follow this routine.

- Stop somewhere level, motor off, with time in hand — not hurried on the side of Priory Orchard.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, yes, yet it does the trick.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Step five is out.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Belmont?

The short order of things, beginning with no starting your engine.

Don't switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is drawn from.

At a forecourt — Sainsbury's, BP or another — the staff will normally help roll the car away, if you ask.

At home in Belmont? Then the car remains where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your engine has already run.

Belmont lies under 10 miles from the M4; on it, use the first junction.

About how far did it go? Crossing Belmont is smaller work than a trip of under 15 miles towards Oxford, so tell us.

## What occurs when we get there in Belmont

Wherever the car came to rest, be it outside Stockham Primary School, near St Mary's Convent Chapel or on your own drive, the van comes to it.

Both the work and the price rest on three answers — what liquid, what amount, and if it has run — so we ask.

No one sets off until you have had our quote over the phone.

Then that tank is emptied and the system purged thoroughly.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

The engine is fired up next and checked to make sure it runs properly, all before our technicians head off.

If your motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents your insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Wrong-fuel cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — so make use of the wait to check yours.
