# Belvedere: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then keep your motor off — and the ignition too.

Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when your fuel system draws it in.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Belvedere, is generally all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before your motor has run.

Before anything, call us on 0333 366 0103.

## What to do straight away, Belvedere: AdBlue in your diesel tank

To do:

- Take the keys out, and so nobody switches the ignition on.

- If you're at all near moving traffic, put your hazards on.

- So you can give us which liquid it was and about how much, save the till receipt or the empty bottle.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting DA17 6, or the name of the nearest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Never:

- Moving your car just a short way is no reason to fire up the engine.

- Switching the key to ignition alone starts your pump going on many diesels. Avoid it.

- Adding extra diesel doesn't work: AdBlue settles out instead of thinning.

- Leave the vehicle where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short way along Eardley Road.

- Don't try to drain the car yourself at the kerbside.

Rolling the vehicle off the pumps is a job for staff to help with, wherever Belvedere forecourt you are on, the the nearest petrol station or any other.

Parked on your own driveway? Then it remains just as it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the motor.

From a separate tank it goes directly to your exhaust, cleaning what your engine lets out.

Nothing inside a fuel pump is designed for this liquid — and none of it was intended to go that way.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from.

The first thing the fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Northumberland Heath last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

Two kinds of harm follow from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps labouring on the parts it gets to for as long as it remains there.

If the AdBlue has reached the lines, waiting overnight in Belvedere leaves things worse. In your tank only, waiting does nothing.

The water in it causes damage of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

Top up a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the BP, and the problem is diluted fuel.

It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it is in the tank it does no damage; the damage comes from running your engine on it.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely wrong liquid.

It cannot simply be run through, because it doesn't burn.

Nor can it be thinned, because it splits again — and the following tankful won't rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters for more with AdBlue, and trying the engine "to see", in the centre of Belvedere or out in West Heath, does more harm than nearly any other slip.

With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol.

If the motor has not run, the AdBlue is still in the tank, and your tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Greater London the vehicle is standing.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Belvedere: how it ends up there

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of vehicles waits right next to the diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

A bottle bought when heading home and tipped in outside the house, rather than at the filling station, is the usual story.

The ways it takes place are few and familiar.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside Lessness Heath Primary School.

After work, a bottle goes in on a drive near Heathdene Drive.

Otherwise, in dim light outside Royal Standard, the car gets topped up by someone using that flap for the first time.

Hired cars, brand-new cars, company motors, or the second car in a family with one of each: the least known vehicles get it the most.

Wherever across Greater London, Belvedere included, the slip doesn't change, and nor does the first step: keep it off.

## Already started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Belvedere?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then.

The fuel filter and lines have had it pulled along, and any running time takes it on to the injection pump and every injector.

Watch for lumpy running, exhaust smoke, lost power, lights on the dash, or a cut-out — coming back from Franks Park, perhaps, or midway across Belvedere.

Pull over when it is safe. Switch off. Keep it off instead of restarting it to check.

Each start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the M25, under 5 miles from Belvedere, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere sensible instead of pressing on.

Mileage counts: each mile pushes the AdBlue further into the system, and so heading for London, under 15 miles away, gives a much bigger job than hopping across Belvedere to the car park by All Saints.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

There's more to clean out once your engine has been started, and our technicians do all of it where the vehicle has ended up.

Spotted soon, it very seldom leaves long-term damage.

## Belvedere: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

The car stays put, whether that is a street near All Saints Church Hall, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station in Belvedere, and the van comes to it.

The work depends on three answers, and we ask for before all else — which fluid got in, the quantity, and if your motor has run.

Right there, that tank is then emptied, and both the polluted diesel and the urea leave as one.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush matters: the whole system is flushed all the way through since residue will not flush out unaided.

A test of your vehicle follows last, after fresh diesel is added and the fuel filter gets cleaned or, if necessary, replaced.

If your engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there.

The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

The last step is to bleed your system on fresh diesel.

You set off as soon as our engineers have started the engine, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a drive around Belvedere or in a space outside the nearest station.

It's tested on fresh diesel to confirm it runs correctly before we go.

Because the job is done in its entirety where the vehicle is, a garage never comes into it.

Your insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

## AdBlue drains in Belvedere and across Greater London

Lessness Heath, Lower Belvedere and Upper Belvedere are among the places around Belvedere that the same teams serve, along with much of Greater London further out, over the DA postcode area.

Guessing doesn't help close to a county line or somewhere hard to describe; phone and check.

Belvedere is a residential suburb, and a call-out drain suits it: whether your car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, we drain it where it stands, and so it never needs to be moved to us.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Belvedere: the cost of fixing it

Not one single figure could be honest, because every job differs.

Whether the engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the cost. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the position of the car, because an open driveway is easier for a technician to reach safely than a tight space behind Upper Belvedere Community Library.

That is why every call from Belvedere starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and if it has run.

Those replies shrink the range down to one number.

The price is quoted on the call, before anyone sets off; settling up happens on the day, by card or over the phone, and nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover comes with many insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van gets there.

## Beside the vehicle around Belvedere, right now?

Then, do nothing — that's the most helpful step available.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Say it's AdBlue, roughly what quantity, and whether the engine ran, on 0333 366 0103. After that Petrol in Diesel handles it, in Belvedere or wherever within Greater London.
