# Bensham: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, leave the motor off and leave the ignition off.

Urea dissolved in water is all AdBlue is.

Being water-based, it won't burn and never combines with diesel; trouble only comes when your pump begins drawing it.

Caught before your motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Bensham.

No step comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank in Bensham

Things to do:

- Take the keys out, so no one switches your ignition on.

- Put the hazard lights on if you're at all near moving traffic.

- Which fluid, and roughly what volume? Save the bottle or your receipt, and we can know.

- Give us a postcode starting NE8 4, or whichever street is closest, and our van finds you straight — so call wherever you are.

Don't do these:

- Shifting the vehicle even a few yards is no reason to start your engine.

- Many diesels run their fuel pump the instant the ignition comes on, so keep the car off.

- AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more fuel will not weaken it.

- Never drive it anywhere, not even a short stretch along Lobley Hill Road.

- No emptying it yourself, at all, at the roadside.

The attendants working at any Bensham filling station — the Esso among them — will usually lend a hand pushing it aside if you ask.

At home, the car remains exactly where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in your engine.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

Neither side suits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and a pump can't deal with urea.

Tipped in with your diesel, it stays separate instead of mixing — quite different from fuel.

It drops, since it is heavier than diesel, and settles down where the pickup draws its fuel from.

The first thing the fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Gateshead last night, and has not been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

It causes two kinds of damage from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that hardens in filters and narrow channels; meanwhile, because it eats at certain metals, every part it reaches suffers for as long as it remains inside.

Where the AdBlue has reached the lines, leaving it till morning around Bensham leaves it worse. In the tank only, time does nothing.

Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector need diesel flowing through them, and so the water part damages them in its own right.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger fault?

Put petrol in a diesel at the EV Chargers and you have a problem of thin fuel.

It mixes with your diesel, and while it is inside the tank it does no damage; the damage comes from running the engine on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

Not burning, it can't simply be run through.

It does not stay mixed, so it can't be weakened. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the motor "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether your car is in Lobley Hill or the middle of Bensham.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

Wherever around Tyne and Wear your vehicle has come to rest, an unstarted motor leaves the AdBlue still inside the tank: the easiest part of any fuel system to clear.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Bensham?

It is not deliberate. Plenty of cars have the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel inlet, now and then under a single flap, and mixing them up is easy in poor light.

Mostly it is never the forecourt: a driver picks up a container driving home and tips it in outside the house.

Mostly, it happens in one of a few familiar ways.

Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Brighton Avenue Primary School the refill is rushed.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Newbury Avenue.

Otherwise, in dim light outside Saltwell Social Club, the car gets topped up by someone opening that flap the first time.

It occurs most in the cars drivers know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Keep it off: that's the first response to an identical mistake, anywhere in Bensham or the remainder of Tyne and Wear you are.

## Already started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Bensham?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in your tank.

The filter and lines have had it pulled through, and any running takes it on to the high-pressure pump and every injector.

You may notice your motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Avondale Park or halfway across Bensham.

No restarting to test: stop once safe, then switch it off.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

On the Central Motorway East, under 3 miles from Bensham, the first junction is where to exit, and anywhere sensible is where to park — not carrying on.

Hopping across Bensham to the car park by Window is one thing; heading for Newcastle upon Tyne, under 3 miles away, is another, since each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. So mileage matters.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Our engineers do all of the cleaning where your car has ended up, and once the engine has been started there is more of it.

Very seldom does it leave long-term damage if it's spotted early.

## Bensham: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

We come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped around Bensham: a side street near Bensham Grove Care Centre, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Which fluid got in, roughly how much, and if your engine has turned over: our technicians check first, because those shape the work.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave together after your tank is drained, on the spot.

Residue from AdBlue won't wash away unaided, so the whole system gets a careful flush, which counts far more here than for petrol.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Not run? In that case expect about half an hour on site for most jobs.

The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Bleeding your system with clean diesel comes last.

Whether it's a parking space at Dunston or a driveway in Bensham, that is where our technicians fire it up and you drive off.

We confirm it runs smoothly on fresh diesel before we leave.

Our engineers do it all wherever your car has ended up, and it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

The insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

## About Bensham itself

Bensham is a suburban area located on the riverside in Tyne and Wear, with a relatively low elevation of around 20 metres. Bensham sits close to the city of Newcastle upon Tyne, approximately 2 miles from the city centre, and is near other local places such as Teams, Saltwell, and Shipcote. Bensham is characterised by a high proportion of flat-type housing, which reflects its urban setting. Bensham is situated in the North East region of England, about 245 miles north of London.

## Bensham and Tyne and Wear: AdBlue drains across the area

AdBlue call-outs around Bensham are passed to vans that cover the towns around it — Teams, Saltwell plus Shipcote — and much of Tyne and Wear further out, across NE postcodes.

If you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask rather than guessing.

A mobile service fits Bensham, a residential suburb: you have no need to bring your vehicle to us, because our engineers empty it there, on a drive, a residential street, a parking area or a filling station.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Bensham

No single price could be fair, because every job differs.

What moves the price is, first of all, whether your engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and after that where the car is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind St Chad's community Project.

That's why each call from Bensham starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and whether it has run.

Given those replies, the range shrinks to a single fixed number.

Quoted on the call before the engineer heads out, it is paid for on the day — card or phone, no deposit.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

## In Bensham and still beside the car?

In that case, touch nothing — that is the best move available.

Keys out; motor and ignition off.

Petrol in Diesel handles the rest, across Bensham or wherever in Tyne and Wear, once you ring 0333 366 0103 saying it's AdBlue, roughly what quantity, and whether the engine ran.
