# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Berinsfield? Don't Start It

Motor off, ignition off: that is where you begin if AdBlue has got into your diesel tank.

Chemically, AdBlue is just urea in water.

As it is water-based, it won't ignite and won't blend with diesel; trouble just starts once the pump begins pulling it.

If the motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and thoroughly flushed where the car stands in Berinsfield.

Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Berinsfield, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do straight away

Do:

- Take the keys out, so no one switches your ignition on.

- If you are at all close to moving traffic, put the hazards on.

- The empty bottle or the till receipt tells us the fluid and the amount, and so don't bin it out.

- Tell us a postcode starting OX10 7, or whichever street is nearest, and our van finds you directly — so ring wherever you stand.

Do not do these:

- Moving your vehicle even a few yards is no reason to fire up the engine.

- Plenty of diesels power their pump the moment your ignition comes on, so keep the car off.

- No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue won't blend, so it is wasted.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short way along Wimblestraw Road.

- No draining it yourself, at all, on the verge.

The attendants on duty at any Berinsfield forecourt — the Murco among them — will usually help rolling it clear if you ask.

If you are on your own drive, leave it precisely where it stands.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your motor.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it is fed into the exhaust, where it treats the gas.

A fuel pump isn't designed to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

It doesn't combine. After it is tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts nothing like fuel.

It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from.

The first thing the system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Clifton Hampden last night, and has not been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

It causes two kinds of damage from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that crystallises in filters and tiny passages; meanwhile, since it attacks certain metals, each part it reaches keeps suffering for as long as it stays inside.

Where the AdBlue is in the lines, waiting till morning around Berinsfield leaves things worse. Inside your tank only, time costs nothing.

Then there is the water: it offers no lubrication to the components that rely on it the most — the injection pump and each injector.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger fault?

Fill a diesel with petrol in error at the BP, and the problem is diluted fuel.

No damage comes as long as it stays put, blended into the diesel — only when your motor works on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is simply the wrong one.

It doesn't burn, and so it cannot just be run through.

Whether the car is in Bridge End or the centre of Berinsfield, turning it over "to see" does more harm in this case than almost any other slip, and the flush matters for more. The reasons: it will not stay blended, so diluting it is impossible; and deposits and corrosion outlast the following tankful.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Anywhere around Oxfordshire the vehicle has come to rest, an unstarted engine leaves the AdBlue still inside the tank: the simplest bit of a fuel system to clear.

## Berinsfield: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Many motors place the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel one, now and then behind one flap, and in dim light the two can appear identical. Nobody intends it.

Mostly it is never the filling station: someone buys a bottle driving home and pours it in outside the house.

The ways it happens are few and familiar.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside Abbey Woods Academy.

Near Green Furlong, a driver tips a container in at home in the evening.

Or the car is topped up in the car park at The Chequers, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

It takes place most in the vehicles drivers know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Keep it switched off: that is the first response to an identical slip, wherever in Berinsfield or the remainder of Oxfordshire you happen to be.

## Started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Berinsfield?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside that tank.

Via the filter, along the pipework, and — given any running — into the injection pump and every injector: that's how far it travels.

Rough running, smoke, lost power, dashboard lights or cutting out: any might show up, perhaps midway across Berinsfield or returning from Berinsfield Park.

Stop when it is safe. Turn off. Keep the car off rather than restarting it to check.

Every start pulls more of it through.

Exit the Wheatley Spur, under 10 miles from Berinsfield, at the next junction and park safely, not driving on.

A quick hop across Berinsfield to the car park by Saint Mary and Saint Berin is one thing; heading towards Oxford, under 10 miles away, is something else, since every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. So distance matters.

Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

There is more to flush once the motor has been started, and our technicians do all of it where the vehicle has ended up.

Long-term damage is very uncommon when it's spotted early.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Berinsfield?

The vehicle stays put, whether that's a street beside Berinsfield Library, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt in Berinsfield, and the van travels to it.

Three replies shape the work, so before anything else our engineers ask what was put in, roughly the amount, and if your engine has turned over.

On the spot, the tank is then emptied, and all of the contaminated diesel and the urea leave at once.

A careful flush matters far more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what remains will not clear out by itself.

Next, your filter: flushed, or changed if it must be. After that clean diesel, and then a check of the vehicle.

About half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs where the motor hasn't run.

Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Last, the system is primed with fresh diesel.

At that point our technicians fire it up and you set off, whether from a parking bay at Culham or a drive around Berinsfield.

It's checked on clean diesel to make sure it runs smoothly before we head off.

As the job is done in its entirety where the car is, a workshop never comes into it.

At the end, you are given the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice plus a written report from the engineer.

## About Berinsfield and where it is

Berinsfield is a small village in Oxfordshire, situated approximately 7 miles south of Oxford and 46 miles west of London. Berinsfield sits in a low-lying area of the Thames Valley at an elevation of around 58 metres, near the villages of Burcot and Dorchester. Berinsfield has a population of around 980 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing.

## AdBlue drains around Berinsfield and across Oxfordshire

AdBlue call-outs around Berinsfield are passed to vans that serve the towns near it — Burcot, Golden Balls plus Dorchester — and most of Oxfordshire beyond, across OX postcodes.

Ring and ask instead of guessing when you are by a county line, or anywhere tricky to pin down.

Berinsfield is a rural village, and a mobile drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it stands, and so it never needs to be moved to us.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Berinsfield?

Every job differs, and so not one single price is fair.

What moves the cost is, firstly, whether the engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and after that where the car is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight spot behind The Berin Centre.

Ahead of any figure, never after, each enquiry from Berinsfield opens with three questions: the fuel, the quantity, plus if the engine ran.

Given those replies, the range narrows to a single firm figure.

You hear that price by phone, before anybody sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van arrives.

## Still alongside the car around Berinsfield?

Then, the best thing to do with your car is to leave it.

Ignition off, engine off, keys out.

Petrol in Diesel takes over the rest, across Berinsfield or anywhere in Oxfordshire, once you phone 0333 366 0103 to say it was AdBlue, roughly what quantity, and if the engine ran.
