# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Berrylands: Why It Happens

Leave your motor and ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Around Berrylands, catching it before the engine turns normally leaves a drain and a thorough flush where it stands.

Not happened yet? Further down, the page explains the why it happens and the how to avoid it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel goes to your engine — yet many newer diesels seen about Berrylands and Seething Wells carry another fluid too.

Your exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the fumes to fresh it, from a separate tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up the diesel side at the pump goes on all the time.

Seldom topped up, AdBlue usually comes out of a bottle, tipped by someone who has to stop and think which filler to use.

It's in the gap that the mistake lives.

## Berrylands: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

Carelessness rarely causes it. Instead is three things lining up at once.

On a drive off Raeburn Avenue before work, or in the car park outside the pub in the village heading home: that's where the hurried top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle tells you, and if it's gone, limp mode kicks in.

The old car's cap is where the hand reaches — yet a hire car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That is a second thing: a strange car.

Lastly, the spout fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in as easily, and once the tip begins, nothing stops it.

It's a few seconds, whether out in Tolworth or right in the centre of Berrylands.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Check these first, on a forecourt in Berrylands or a drive out in Southborough. Seconds, that's all.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- Many cars give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Check inside the fuel flap: many cars have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by your diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside the nearest station? Ask whoever drove the car last before leaving, rather than when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

For the day the light comes on — anywhere it is around Greater London — a simple routine to use.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Pine Gardens.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, perhaps, but it does the trick.

- Both under one flap? So confirm the cap on your diesel filler is still shut before raising the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check again, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Find at the second or third stage that AdBlue went in the diesel filler? That is where you stop.

Skip step five altogether.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Berrylands?

Don't start the engine: that is where the short order of things begins.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the car on.

Thinning it with more diesel fails, since AdBlue sinks to the bottom instead of blending — and that is where your fuel is sucked from.

The staff at Esso, BP or any forecourt will normally lend a hand pushing the car clear when asked.

If you're on your own drive in Berrylands, leave the car where it sits.

When the engine has run already, stop somewhere safe and turn it off.

Come off the M25 — under 10 miles out of Berrylands — at the first exit.

Mileage matters — a quick hop across Berrylands is a smaller job than heading under 15 miles towards Westminster — so say roughly how far it went.

## Berrylands: what occurs when we turn up

Wherever the vehicle came to rest, be it outside Christ Church CofE Primary School, beside Berrylands Scouts or at home, our van comes to it.

Those replies determine this work and the price, so our engineers ask what was put in, about how much, and whether it has run.

During the call itself, you are told our quote — ahead of anything else.

Emptying that tank comes next, then a full flush of your system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

We don't leave until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

Unstarted vehicles usually mean a half-hour visit from arrival. The kit is safe on a live forecourt, and quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork an insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

It's worth checking your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.

## Berrylands and Greater London: AdBlue drains across the area

Surbiton and Old Malden are among the places around Berrylands, a residential suburb, that the same vans cover, over KT postcodes.

Give a postcode beginning KT5 9, and our van arrives quickest.

Moving the car is not needed.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Berrylands Park, a side street near Emmanuel: we drain the vehicle where it is.

Assuming doesn't help behind Surbiton Hill Methodist Tennis Club, on a boundary, or anywhere hard to pin down; phone and ask.
