# Why It Occurs and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Bevois Mount

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and your ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the motor runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Bevois Mount.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Diesel goes to your engine — yet plenty of newer diesels seen about Bevois Mount and Westwood Park carry another liquid too.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust gas and cleans it.

Every tank comes with one filler of its own.

Other cars put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot more have both together behind one flap.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less regularly, usually from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

It's in that gap that the error lives.

## Bevois Mount: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the vehicle, and letting it run dry means limp mode — so a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Earls Road, or outside Lime Bar on the way home after work.

The old car's filler is where the hand goes — but a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That is a second factor: a new motor.

Third, the spout fits: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in just as readily, and once the pour starts, no part halts it.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Bevois Mount or out in Bevois Town.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Bellevue or a forecourt around Bevois Mount, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Position can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally don't.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of motors, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Check for it.

- The handbook says where it lives if your filler is not next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside St Denys.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Hampshire that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Spear Road, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park then switch off properly.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, perhaps, yet it does the trick.

- The diesel cap remains on. When the two sit under a flap, confirm it is closed before the bottle comes up.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, and look once more — making sure your diesel cap remained closed the whole time. After that, start the vehicle.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Step five is off limits.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Bevois Mount?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your motor.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels the moment the ignition is switched on — so keep it off.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is drawn from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it is the Esso or the BP, ask the staff to help push the car clear of the pump.

On your own drive in Bevois Mount? So the car stays put.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your engine has already run.

Bevois Mount sits under 3 miles from the M27; there, take the first junction.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Bevois Mount is smaller a job than a run of under 3 miles towards Southampton, so tell us.

## Our arrival around Bevois Mount, and what occurs next

Our van comes to the vehicle wherever it stopped — your own drive, near Bevois Town Church (Southampton Chinese Christian Church Centre), or by Bevois Town Primary School.

The answers determine this work and our price, and so we ask what went in, about how much, and whether it has run.

The price is given over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Then the tank is drained and your system rinsed thoroughly.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

Testing is at the end: before that, clean diesel goes in, and the filter is cleaned or changed if necessary.

Before we go, our technicians start it and check that it's running smoothly.

With pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where your motor has not run take roughly half an hour once our engineers are there.

Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. At the end, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for your insurer.

Misfuelling cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — so make use of the wait to check yours.
