# Biddenden: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Pause here for a moment when the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and call 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when the engine hasn't run, it is drained and thoroughly rinsed where the car sits in Biddenden.

Here in advance? Then what follows explains how it happens and what to prevent it happening at all.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Plenty of current diesels on the roads about Biddenden and Standen carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, and there spraying cleans the fumes.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the layout on a lot of cars. On others, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

The diesel side is fuelled at the pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less frequently, usually from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs in Biddenden

Carelessness seldom causes it. Instead is three things coming up together.

Hurry follows from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a driveway off Tenterden Road, or on the way home in the car park outside The Red Lion.

Then the vehicle is strange. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Biddenden or out in Woolpack Corner.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Fosten Green or a forecourt around Biddenden, check these. They take a few seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it rather than going by position.

- On plenty of motors, size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of cars say there which fuel goes where.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler sits if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Headcorn? Ask whoever drove it last before you set off, rather than once the light goes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

When the light goes on, anywhere across Kent, follow this routine.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of North Street.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" aloud as unscrewing it. It sounds silly. It does the trick.

- The two behind a single flap? So make sure the lid on your diesel side stays shut ahead of raising the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start your car, shut the cap and check again that the diesel cap was never opened off.

Find during the second or third step that the bottle went in the diesel tank? That is where you stop.

Skip step five entirely.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Biddenden?

Don't start your motor: that's how the short order of things starts.

Keep the ignition off as well, because on plenty of diesels switching it on by itself starts the fuel pump.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is pulled from.

The staff at Gulf, Esso or another forecourt will normally help pushing your car away if you ask.

If you are on your own drive around Biddenden, leave the car where it sits.

Where the engine has run already, stop somewhere safe and switch the car off.

Biddenden sits under 10 miles from the M20; there, take the first junction.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Canterbury, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Biddenden.

## Our arrival around Biddenden, and what happens next

Wherever your car came to rest, whether outside John Mayne Church of England Primary School, near Biddenden Village Hall or on your own drive, our van travels to it.

What liquid was put in, the quantity, and if it ran: our technicians ask because those answers decide both work and quote.

You get that price by phone, before anybody sets off.

Next: draining, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and none of that washes away unaided. Hence it counts more.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

We don't go until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

Unrun cars usually mean a half-hour visit after arrival. The kit is fine on a live filling station, and quiet enough for a driveway late at night.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork your insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

While we travel, take a look at your insurance documents; many include cover for misfuelling.

Before you pour, read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank anyway, leave the vehicle off and call 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it waits, anywhere in Kent.
