# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Bidwell

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then leave your motor off — and your ignition as well.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that's AdBlue.

It doesn't burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when the system draws it in.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Bidwell, is generally all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before your engine has run.

Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Bidwell: the first few minutes

Do:

- Keys out — that way no one can switch anything on.

- Put the hazards on if you're anywhere near moving traffic.

- Keep your receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what got in and roughly how much.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting LU5 6, or the name of the nearest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Do not do these:

- Not even briefly, and not to roll your car: the motor remains off.

- Your ignition stays off: on many diesels, turning it on is enough to run the pump.

- Adding more diesel does not help: AdBlue separates out instead of blending.

- Keep it where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short way along Skye Gardens.

- Do not try to drain it yourself by the roadside.

Get the attendants to help you roll the car away from the island if you're on a forecourt in Bidwell, whether it's the Gulf or elsewhere.

At home, the vehicle remains exactly where it was left.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your motor.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

A fuel pump is not made to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

Poured in with your diesel, it stays apart rather than mixing — quite different from fuel.

It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from.

Simplest of all: one that had AdBlue in Parkside overnight and hasn't been started since. The AdBlue waits at the base of that tank, undrawn — but it will be first through if your motor starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

After it's pulled in, the harm takes two forms.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it strands urea that crystallises in filters and tiny passages; meanwhile, since it eats at some metals, each part it reaches keeps suffering for as long as it stays inside.

A vehicle left standing in Bidwell with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not.

Water protects nothing. The injection pump and each injector need diesel flowing through them, so the water content harms them in its own right.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's frequently worse than petrol

A problem of thinned fuel is what you end up with after filling a diesel with petrol at the Esso.

It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it's in that tank it causes no damage; the damage comes from running the engine on it.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally wrong substance.

It doesn't burn, so it can't simply be run through.

Nor can it be thinned, because it splits again — and the next tankful will not clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts for more with AdBlue, and turning the key "to see", in the centre of Bidwell or out in Chalk Hill, does more harm than almost any other mistake.

With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol.

Anywhere around Bedfordshire the vehicle has come to rest, an unrun engine means the AdBlue yet in the tank: the simplest part of a fuel system to empty.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Bidwell

In dim light, two caps side by side — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, occasionally behind one flap — can look the same. Nobody intends it; many layouts invite it.

Usually it's never the forecourt: a driver picks up a bottle heading home and tips it in outside the house.

Usually, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways.

The top-up is rushed outside Tithe Farm Primary School, after the dash flashed with a warning as the children were dropped off.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Bedford Road.

Or your car is topped up in the car park outside The Old Red Lion, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.

The least known cars get it most — hire cars, brand-new cars, fleet ones, and the other vehicle of a home with both fuel types.

Keep it off: that is the first step to the same mistake, wherever in Bidwell or the remainder of Bedfordshire you happen to be.

## Bidwell: started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

It has been pulled through the filter and the fuel lines, and if the motor ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors.

You may notice the engine running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Dunstablians RUFC or halfway across Bidwell.

When safe, pull over then turn everything off — without restarting to see.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

Exit the M1, under 3 miles from Bidwell, at the next junction and park somewhere safe, rather than driving on.

Hopping across Bidwell to the car park by Brethren's Meeting Room is one matter; heading for Milton Keynes, under 15 miles away, is something else, because every mile pushes the AdBlue further in. So mileage counts.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

There's more to rinse out once the motor has run, and our technicians do all of it where your car has come to a stop.

Very rarely does it leave permanent damage when it's spotted quickly.

## What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves in Bidwell

We come to the car, wherever it has stopped in Bidwell: a side street close to Houghton Regis Community Centre, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

The job depends on three answers, and our engineers ask for first — what was put in, the amount, and whether your motor has run.

Then the tank is cleared where the car stands, so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

A full flush counts far more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what remains will not wash out on its own.

A test of the car follows at the end, after clean diesel goes in and the fuel filter gets flushed or, where necessary, swapped.

Not run? Then expect roughly half an hour once we are there for most jobs.

Explosion-proof pumps make a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the street at night.

The last step is to bleed the fuel system on fresh diesel.

Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where the car is parked, by Leagrave or on a driveway around Bidwell.

It is checked on clean diesel to be sure it runs smoothly before we go.

The entire job is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to go to a workshop.

At the end, you are given the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

Bidwell's riverside setting provides a distinctive character to the hamlet.

## Bidwell and Bedfordshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Houghton Regis, Thorn and Tithe Farm are among the places near Bidwell that the same vans serve, together with much of Bedfordshire beyond, throughout the LU postcode area.

Guessing doesn't help close to a county line or somewhere hard to describe; phone and ask.

No towing is needed. In Bidwell, a rural hamlet, a van that comes to you fits: the vehicle is emptied where it stands, whether in a drive, a side street, a car park or a filling station.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Bidwell?

Not one single figure would be honest, since each job is different.

Whether the engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what moves the price. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the position of the car, because an open driveway is simpler for a van to reach safely than a tight spot behind All Saints Parish Church.

With that in mind, every call from Bidwell opens with the identical trio — what went in, how much, if it ran — ahead of any figure.

With those replies, a range narrows to a single firm figure.

Quoted on the call before the engineer heads out, the job is paid for on the day — card or phone, nothing in advance.

As our engineer is travelling, dig out your insurance: plenty cover misfuelling.

## Still next to your car in Bidwell?

In that case, do nothing — that is the most helpful move there is.

Engine off, keys out, ignition off.

Ring 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, the amount, and whether the engine ran is everything our technicians ask. Petrol in Diesel takes over the rest across Bedfordshire, Bidwell too.
