# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Billinghay: Why It Occurs and How to Prevent It

Stop reading for a moment if your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

In Billinghay, catching it before the motor runs usually leaves a drain and a thorough flush where it stands.

The remainder of this page covers why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't — handy if you are reading before it has happened.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Diesel goes to the engine — yet many modern diesels driven round Billinghay and Tattershall Bridge carry a second liquid as well.

Your exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the gas to fresh it, from a separate tank.

There's a filler for each tank.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Filling your diesel side at the petrol pump happens all the time.

The AdBlue side is filled far less often, usually from a bottle, and usually by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

The slip lives in that gap.

## Billinghay: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

On a driveway off West Street before work, or in the car park at The Ship Inn on the way home: that's where the rushed top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle tells you, and if it's empty, limp mode follows.

Then the vehicle is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and the hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, once started, carries on.

It's seconds, whether in North Kyme or bang in the centre of Billinghay.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Timberland or a forecourt in Billinghay, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally isn't. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- On many cars, size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Check for it.

- The handbook shows which it lives when the filler isn't next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Ruskington.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

When the light goes on, wherever across Lincolnshire, follow this routine.

- Stop on level, engine off, with time in hand — never rushing on the side of Victoria Street.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Find at stage two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop just there.

Skip step five altogether.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Billinghay?

Do not start the engine: that's how the short order of things starts.

Don't switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is drawn from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it is the the nearest petrol station or the another forecourt nearby, ask the staff to help push the vehicle clear of the pump.

If you are on your own driveway in Billinghay, leave it where it is.

Already run? Stop once it is safe, then switch off.

The next junction is where to leave if you are on the M180, under 50 miles from Billinghay.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Lincoln, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Billinghay.

## Billinghay: what happens when our technicians turn up

We come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside The Billinghay Church of England Primary School, close to Saint Michael or on your own driveway.

What liquid was put in, the quantity, and if it ran: our engineers ask because those replies decide both work and quote.

No one sets off until you have had our price over the phone.

Then that tank is emptied and the fuel system purged thoroughly.

Much more than with petrol, it matters here: crystals form, certain metals corrode, and nothing washes away on its own, however long it sits.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

We do not leave until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

If your motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents your insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

It's worth looking at your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.

Draining happens on the spot, be it a driveway, a street near Billinghay Village Hall, or a lay-by on the way to Car Dike Plantation.

Awkward to pin down, like the back of North Kyme Village Hall? Close to a county line? Asking beats assuming, and so phone.
