# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Billy Row? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, keep your motor off and leave the ignition off.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue.

It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when the system pulls it in.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Billy Row, is normally all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before the motor has run.

Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Your next steps straight away, Billy Row: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Do these:

- Take the keys out, so no one switches the ignition on.

- If you are at all near moving traffic, put the hazards on.

- Which fluid, and roughly what amount? Save the bottle or the receipt, and our engineers will see.

- Give us a postcode starting DL15 9, or whichever street is nearest, and our van finds you straight — so ring from wherever you are.

Never:

- No starting your engine — not for a second, not to shift the car.

- Turning your key to ignition by itself starts the pump running on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.

- AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel won't thin it.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short stretch along Billy Row Green.

- By the road, do not attempt emptying it on your own.

The attendants working at any Billy Row filling station — the Mount Pleasant Garage among them — will normally lend a hand rolling it clear if you ask.

If you're on your own drive, leave the vehicle exactly where it sits.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in your engine.

Its own reservoir holds it, and from there it is sprayed into the exhaust, and there it cleans the gas.

Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Tipped in with the diesel, it keeps separate rather than mixing — entirely unlike fuel.

Heavier than diesel, it drops and pools underneath it — the very spot the intake sucks from.

When the system runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Until then it sits beneath the diesel, and that is why a vehicle topped up in Sunniside last night and never switched on remains the simple case, as long as nobody turns the key.

From there it does two kinds of harm.

What remains when the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in narrow passages and clog filters. Worse, it attacks certain metals in a fuel system, and carries on till it is cleared out.

Overnight, a car sitting around Billy Row with AdBlue in its lines gets worse; if it is only inside the tank, nothing changes.

Diesel lubricates the injection pump and each injector as it flows; water offers none of that, and that is a second kind of damage.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

Petrol put into a diesel on Esso's forecourt makes your fuel thin — that's the main fault.

Harm only comes from driving on it. Blended into the diesel and left in that tank, it causes none.

AdBlue in a diesel is another problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

It does not burn, and so it can't just be run through.

Whether your car sits in High Beechburn or the heart of Billy Row, firing it up "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake, and the flush counts for more. Why: it will not stay blended, so diluting it fails; and crystals and corrosion outlast the following fill.

As with petrol, there's good news.

Never started? Then the AdBlue sits only inside the tank, the simplest section of the entire system to clear, wherever the vehicle has stopped in Durham.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Billy Row

Many vehicles place the AdBlue filler beside the diesel one, now and then behind one flap, and in dim light the two can appear identical. No one intends it.

Most of the time it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the forecourt.

The ways it happens are few and familiar.

The refill is rushed outside Peases West Academy, because the dash lit up with a warning while the kids were taken in.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Institute Terrace.

Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park outside The Green, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

It comes up most in a rental, a brand-new vehicle, a company vehicle, or the spare vehicle in a home with one of each fuels — the vehicles people know least.

An identical mistake, an identical first step — keep it off — wherever you happen to be in Billy Row or the remainder of Durham.

## Billy Row: started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank.

The fuel filter and pipework have had it pulled along, and any running carries it on to the injection pump and each injector.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard lights or cutting out: each might appear, perhaps midway across Billy Row or coming back from Kittys Wood.

When you safely can, pull over and switch everything off — with no restarting to test.

Each start pulls more of it through.

On the A1(M), under 10 miles from Billy Row, the first junction is where to leave, and anywhere safe is where to park — not carrying on.

Each mile pushes the AdBlue further into the system. That's why crossing Billy Row to park beside Billy Row War Memorial and a drive of under 10 miles for Durham are very separate jobs.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Our engineers do all of the cleaning where your car has come to a stop, and once the motor has run there is more of it.

Very rarely does it leave lasting damage if it's spotted early.

## Billy Row: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

Wherever it has come to rest around Billy Row — a forecourt, a lay-by, a drive, a street by Crook Leisure Centre — the van comes to the car.

Before anything else our technicians ask what went in, about how much, and whether the motor has been run, because those answers decide the work.

Then that tank is emptied where the car stands, so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

Residue from AdBlue won't flush away by itself, so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which counts much more with urea than for petrol.

Testing the vehicle comes at the end, once fresh diesel goes in and the filter is cleaned or, if needed, swapped.

Not run? In that case expect roughly half an hour on site for most jobs.

Explosion-proof pumps make a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

The final step is to prime the system on new diesel.

At that point we fire it up and you set off, whether from a parking bay at Bishop Auckland or a driveway in Billy Row.

Before we leave, our engineers confirm it's running smoothly with fresh diesel in.

The entire job is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to go to a garage.

At the end, there is the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

Assuming won't help by a border or anywhere tricky to pin down; ring and check.

Billy Row is a village, and a call-out drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, we drain it where it stands, and so it never needs to be shifted to us.

## Billy Row: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

No single price could be honest, because every job differs.

Whether the engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what moves the price. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the location of your car, because an open driveway is simpler for a technician to get to safely than a tight spot behind Our Lady and St. Cuthbert's.

Ahead of a figure, not after, every call from Billy Row opens with the same three checks: the fuel, the amount, plus if the engine ran.

When those are answered, a range becomes a single firm figure.

Before anyone sets off, you are told our price on the phone. And payment is on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing in advance.

While the van is travelling, dig out your insurance: plenty include misfuelling.

## In Billy Row and still alongside the car?

Leaving your vehicle alone is, then, the best move you can do.

Motor off, keys out, ignition off.

Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us it's AdBlue, about how much, and whether it's run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, around Billy Row or anywhere across Durham.
