# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Birchills: Why It Happens and How to Stop It

Pause here for a moment when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if your engine has not run, it is drained and thoroughly purged where your vehicle sits around Birchills.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the page explains the reasons it occurs and the ways to avoid it for good.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Plenty of newer diesels around Caldmore, as well as Birchills, run on two liquids; the engine takes just your diesel.

Your exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the gas to clean them, from a separate tank.

Each tank has a filler of its own.

Many of cars have a single flap for both, while others move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, the diesel side gets filled constantly.

Far less frequently, the AdBlue side gets topped up — mostly from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## Birchills: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

It is seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a driveway off Old Birchills before work, or in the car park outside The New Inn on the way home: that's where the rushed top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle warns you, and once it's gone, limp mode follows.

Then the vehicle is new. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

It's a few seconds, whether in Ryecroft or right in the heart of Birchills.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

A couple of seconds is all these take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a drive in Coal Pool or a forecourt in Birchills.

- Check the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue ones are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally are not.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of vehicles. Check for it.

- Cannot find it beside the diesel inlet? In that case check below the bonnet or in the boot — the handbook will say where.

- The previous driver knows. Check when you pick up a hire car or fleet car — at Walsall's car park, say — rather than once the warning appears.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

When the light goes on, wherever in West Midlands, use this routine.

- Turn off once parked — flat ground, motor stopped, and not rushed beside Miner Street at the roadside.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap works — after you have located the filler and read it.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Don't carry on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Birchills already?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the engine.

On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch the car on.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it's the Sainsbury's or the Asda, ask the staff to help push the car away from the pump.

At home in Birchills? Then the vehicle stays put.

Where the motor has run already, pull over safely and switch the vehicle off.

Come off the M6 — under a mile out of Birchills — at the first exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Wolverhampton, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Birchills.

## Birchills: what happens when we get there

The van comes to the car wherever it stopped — your own driveway, beside St Andrew, or outside Croft Academy.

Those replies decide the work and the quote, and so our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and whether it's run.

On the call itself, you hear the quote — before anything else.

Your system is then rinsed thoroughly, once the tank is cleared.

More than with petrol, it matters here: crystals form, some metals are attacked, and nothing washes away unaided, no matter how long it is left.

A test is last: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and the filter is cleaned or changed as needed.

Before leaving, our technicians start it and check that it is running properly.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour once we get there, provided the engine has not run — and the pumps our technicians use are safe on a live forecourt yet quiet after dark outside a house.

Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. At the end, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in many insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to check yours.

The vehicle does not need to shift.

We drain it where it is — a side street near Syeda Fatima Zahra Centre, a lay-by on the way to Black Country Millennium Forest, a driveway.

Ring and ask rather than guessing if you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of St Patrick.
