# How It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Birchmoor

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case put this page aside for now, keep the ignition and engine off, and call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the motor runs, it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Birchmoor.

The rest of this page explains why it takes place and how to make sure it does not — useful if you're reading ahead of time.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads round Birchmoor and Dordon carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust stream and cleans it.

Separate tanks, separate fillers.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the layout on a lot of motors. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

Rarely filled, AdBlue usually goes in out of a bottle, poured by someone who must stop and think what filler it needs.

Mistakes happen in the gap between them.

## Birchmoor: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the car, and letting it run out means limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Birchmoor Road, or outside Game Cock Inn on the way home after work.

Then your car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Nothing halts the tip after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it takes place in Polesworth or the middle of Birchmoor, it is the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Look at these before pouring, at a forecourt in Birchmoor or a drive over in Wilnecote. Seconds, that's all.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Trust the cap, not where it sits.

- On plenty of cars, the size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside the fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on many motors. Check for it.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by your diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Polesworth? Check with the person who drove it last before you set off, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

Wherever around Warwickshire the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Hermitage Lane.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you have located the filler and read it.

- The diesel cap remains on. When both share a flap, confirm it is shut before the bottle comes up.

- Stop once your tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; until then, tip gently through the own spout.

- Shut the cap, then check once more — confirm your diesel filler stayed shut throughout. After that, start the car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Leave out stage five entirely.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Birchmoor?

Short order, then. First: your motor stays off.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch it on.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is pulled from.

The staff at Esso, Polesworth Garage or another forecourt will usually help pushing the vehicle away when you ask.

On your own drive in Birchmoor? Then the car stays where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the motor has already run.

On the M42, under a mile from Birchmoor, that means the next junction.

A short hop across Birchmoor is a smaller job than a run towards Lichfield, under 10 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival around Birchmoor, and what takes place next

Outside Birchwood Primary School, near St John or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, we come to it.

Those replies decide this work and the price, so our engineers ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it has run.

During the phone call itself, you are told the price — ahead of dispatch.

Draining your tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

The filter flushed or, if it must be, swapped; fresh diesel in; and then a test of your vehicle.

Next our engineers start the car and check it runs smoothly before leaving.

If the motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork your insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

It's worth looking at your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.
