# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Bishopstone: Why It Happens and How to Prevent It

Stop here a minute if the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Bishopstone.

The remainder of this page covers why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't — useful if you are reading before it has happened.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Diesel goes to the engine — yet plenty of newer diesels driven about Bishopstone and Broomfield hold another fluid too.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has a filler of its own.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the layout on a lot of motors. On others, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

The diesel side is fuelled at the petrol pump all the time.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly.

It is in that gap that the slip lives.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place around Bishopstone

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

On a driveway off Fairfax Drive before work, or in the car park at Rising Sun on the way home: that's where the rushed top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle tells you, and if it's empty, limp mode kicks in.

Then your car is new. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

Whether it occurs in Hillborough or the middle of Bishopstone, it is the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Be it a Bishopstone forecourt or a drive over in Reculver, spend a couple of seconds over these before any is poured in.

- Check the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue ones are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually are not.

- Many vehicles fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Look inside the fuel flap: plenty of vehicles have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler is if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Herne Bay, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

Wherever across Kent the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Bishopstone Lane.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew it. It seems daft. It works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave it on.

- Finish when your tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; until then, pour gently using the own spout.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Spot at stage two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? So stop right there.

Leave out step five entirely.

## Bishopstone: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Don't start your motor: that is how the short order of things starts.

Leave the ignition off too, since on plenty of diesels it by itself starts your fuel pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is drawn from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

Ask the staff to help push the car away from the pump if you're at a forecourt — the Sainsbury's, the Esso or anywhere else.

On your own drive around Bishopstone? Then the car remains put.

Where the motor has run by now, pull over somewhere safe then switch the vehicle off.

Leave the M2 — under 15 miles out of Bishopstone — at the next junction.

About how far did it go? Crossing Bishopstone is less a job than a run of under 10 miles towards Canterbury, so tell us.

## Bishopstone: what occurs when we turn up

By Reculver Church of England Primary School, close to Bishopstone Glen or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, we come to it.

Our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and if it has run, since the replies determine the work and our quote.

No one sets off before you've heard the price by phone.

Next: draining, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

A test comes last: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and the filter is flushed or replaced as needed.

Before we leave, our engineers start it and check that it's running smoothly.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour once our engineers arrive, provided your motor hasn't run — and the pumps we use are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet after dark outside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It is worth looking at your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.

Guessing doesn't help at the back of St Mary the Virgin Church, on a border, or somewhere hard to describe; phone and check.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway, leave the car off then call 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel clears it where it stands, anywhere in Kent.
