# Why It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Bissom

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and the ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a thorough flush, carried out just where the car sits around Bissom, is normally all it needs when found before your engine runs.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Plenty of newer diesels around Lower Treluswell, as well as Bissom, run on two liquids; your engine takes just the diesel.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Every tank has a filler of its own.

Many of cars share a single flap for the two, while others move the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up your diesel side at the pump happens all the time.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Bissom: how it happens

It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the vehicle, and running dry leads to limp mode — so a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Bissom Road, or outside Kings Arms on the way home that evening.

Then the vehicle is new. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

Whether it occurs in St Gluvias or the middle of Bissom, it is the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Flushing or a forecourt in Bissom.

- Position misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue ones are often blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally don't.

- Check the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of cars say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says where it lives if the filler is not next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Penryn.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Cornwall that is.

- Turn off after you park — flat ground, engine off, and not rushed by Church Hill on the verge.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap works — after you have located your filler and read the cap.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.

- Finish when the tank fills or the bottle is empty; before that, pour gently using the built-in spout.

- Before you start the car, close the cap and check a second time that your diesel cap never opened off.

Find during the second or third step that the bottle went into the diesel filler? That's where you stop.

Don't carry on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Bissom?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the motor.

Leave the ignition off as well, since on plenty of diesels switching it on alone starts your pump.

Thinning it with extra diesel won't work, since AdBlue sinks to the bottom instead of blending — and that is where your fuel is sucked from.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it is the Texaco or the Esso, ask the staff to help roll your car clear of the petrol pump.

If you're on your own drive around Bissom, leave the car where it sits.

When your engine has run already, stop somewhere safe and turn it off.

On the M5, over 50 miles from Bissom, that means the next junction.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Bissom is smaller a job than a run of under 10 miles to Truro, so tell us.

## What occurs when our technicians turn up in Bissom

Wherever the vehicle came to rest, be it by Penryn Primary Academy, beside St Gluvias' Church or at home, the van comes to it.

Both the work and the price depend on three replies — which fluid, what amount, and whether it has run — so our technicians ask.

No one heads out before you've heard our quote by phone.

The system is then cleaned thoroughly, after that tank is emptied.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of it washes out by itself. Hence it counts more.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

We do not leave until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

Unrun vehicles mostly mean a half-hour visit after the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a busy filling station, and hushed enough for a driveway after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It's worth checking your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.

There's no need to shift the vehicle.

The drain happens on the spot, be it a driveway, a road by Jubilee Wharf Gallery, or a lay-by towards Ash Wood.

Assuming doesn't help behind Penryn Memorial Gardens, on a border, or anywhere awkward to describe; phone and check.

## Bissom people: the short version

First, the cap; after that, the pour.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank anyway, leave it off then phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel clears it where it waits, anywhere across Cornwall.
