# How It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Blackboys

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and your ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your engine runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Blackboys.

The rest of this page explains why it takes place and how to make sure it does not — handy if you're reading ahead of time.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Not one fluid but two: that's how plenty of newer diesels around Blackboys and Framfield carry, with diesel for your engine.

Your exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the fumes to clean it, from a separate tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

Some motors put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others place both side by side behind one flap.

Filling your diesel side at the pump goes on constantly.

Seldom filled, AdBlue usually comes from a bottle, tipped by a driver who must stop and think what cap to use.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Blackboys: how it takes place

Carelessness seldom explains it. What does is three things coming up together.

On a driveway off Framfield Road before work, or in the car park outside The Blackboys Inn on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle warns you, and if it's gone, limp mode follows.

New-to-you motors are second, too. Hire cars, new vehicles and company vehicles put their fillers in new places, and the hand reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

Third, the bottle goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in as readily, and once the pour starts, nothing stops it.

Pounsley or the heart of Blackboys: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Look at these before pouring, at a forecourt around Blackboys or a driveway out in Hawkhurst Common. A few seconds, that's all.

- Read the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue ones are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually are not.

- Many vehicles give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Open the filler flap and look for a label — plenty of vehicles mark which goes in which filler right there.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by the diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Buxted? Check with the person who drove the vehicle last before you set off, not once the light goes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across East Sussex that is.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Mount Pleasant.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- Both under a single flap? Then confirm the cap on the diesel filler stays closed before raising the bottle.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Skip stage five altogether.

## Blackboys: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your motor.

Keep the ignition off too, because on many diesels switching it on by itself runs your pump.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

The staff at Shell, JET or another forecourt will normally help pushing the vehicle clear when asked.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Blackboys.

Already started? Pull over when it is safe, then turn off.

Leave the M23 — under 25 miles out of Blackboys — at the next junction.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Brighton and Hove, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Blackboys.

## When our engineers arrive around Blackboys, what happens?

Anywhere the vehicle came to rest, whether by Blackboys Church of England Primary School, beside Blackboys Village Hall or on your own drive, our van comes to it.

The answers settle the work and our quote, so we ask what went in, about how much, and if it's run.

No one heads out before you have heard our quote over the phone.

Then the tank is drained and the fuel system purged thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

We do not leave until it has been started and is running smoothly.

Unstarted vehicles usually need a half-hour visit after the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a live filling station, and quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Your insurer usually wants an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to look at yours.
