# Blaengwrach: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Stop reading a minute when the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when the motor has not run, it's drained and fully purged where the vehicle is in Blaengwrach.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads around Blaengwrach and Pentreclwydau carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust gas and cleans it.

Each tank has its own filler.

Other motors keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others place both side by side under one flap.

At the pump, the diesel side gets filled all the time.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less frequently.

It's in the gap that the slip happens.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Blaengwrach: how it happens

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Church Crescent before work, or in the car park outside The Dunraven on the way home.

Unfamiliar cars come second, too. Hire cars, new vehicles and company motors place their fillers differently, and the hand goes for the cap used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, once begun, keeps on.

It takes seconds, be it out in Cwmgwrach or bang in the centre of Blaengwrach.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Whether a Blaengwrach forecourt or a drive out in Pontwalby, spend a couple of seconds on these before any goes in.

- Check the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue caps are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.

- Many motors give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Lift the filler flap and look for a label — many vehicles show which belongs in which inlet just there.

- The handbook says where it is when the filler is not next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Treherbert.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

Anywhere across Neath Port Talbot the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Turn off once parked — flat ground, engine off, and never rushed beside High Street on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. When the two share a flap, confirm it's closed before the bottle comes up.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Don't go on to step five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Blaengwrach?

Short order, then. Top of that: your engine remains unstarted.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch it on.

Thinning it with more diesel fails, since AdBlue settles to the bottom instead of blending — and that is where your fuel is drawn from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it is the Texaco or the Esso, ask the attendants to help roll the vehicle clear of the pump.

Your own driveway around Blaengwrach is where it stays.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

On the M4, under 15 miles from Blaengwrach, that means the next exit.

A short hop across Blaengwrach is a smaller job than a run towards Swansea, under 25 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## What occurs when our engineers get there in Blaengwrach

The van comes to the vehicle wherever it has come to rest — your own drive, beside St Mary's Church, or by the local primary school.

Our technicians ask what got in, about how much, and whether it's run, since those replies decide the work and the price.

No one sets off until you have had our price over the phone.

After that: a drain, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Then our engineers fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly before we leave.

With pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine hasn't run take roughly half an hour after we arrive.

No money upfront; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

Misfuelling cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — so use the wait to look at yours.
