# Blagrove: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then set this page down a moment, keep your ignition and motor off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

In Blagrove, finding it before your engine turns usually means a drain and a full flush on the spot.

Reading before the event? In that case the rest explains why it happens and how to stop it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of modern diesels around Toothill, like those in Blagrove, carry on two liquids; the motor gets just the diesel.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust stream and cleans it.

There's a filler for every tank.

Some vehicles put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more have the two together under one flap.

Topping up the diesel side at the pump happens constantly.

Far less often, the AdBlue side gets topped up — mostly from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

It is in the gap that the error happens.

## Blagrove: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a drive off Ramsden Road before work, or in the car park outside The Windmill heading home: that's where the hurried top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and once it's empty, limp mode follows.

Unfamiliar cars come next, as well. Rentals, new cars and company vehicles place their fillers differently, and habit reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

Windmill Hill or the heart of Blagrove: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Check these first, on a forecourt around Blagrove or a driveway over in The Prinnels. Seconds, that's all.

- Read the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue ones are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally aren't.

- Many cars give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Look inside the fuel flap: many vehicles carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler isn't by the diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Swindon? Check with the person who drove the car last before you set off, rather than once the light goes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

When the light goes on, anywhere in Wiltshire, follow this routine.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Frankland Road.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap works — once you have found your filler and read the cap.

- The two under one flap? So confirm the cap on the diesel side stays shut before raising the bottle.

- Stop once the tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, tip gently using the own spout.

- Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Never go on to step five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Blagrove?

The short order of things, beginning with no starting your motor.

Don't switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

At a forecourt — BP, Asda or any other — the attendants will normally help push the vehicle away, when you ask.

Your own drive around Blagrove is where it stays.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

The next junction is the place to come off if you're on the M4, under a mile from Blagrove.

Distance counts — a quick hop across Blagrove makes a smaller job than heading under 25 miles towards Bath — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## When we turn up in Blagrove, what happens?

By Millbrook Primary School, close to Freshbrook Evangelical Church or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, our technicians come to it.

Which fluid went in, the amount, and if it ran: we ask because the answers decide both work and quote.

Nobody sets off until you have heard the quote over the phone.

The fuel system is then flushed thoroughly, after that tank is drained.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and none of it washes out by itself. Hence it counts more.

Testing comes last: before that, clean diesel is added, and the fuel filter is cleaned or replaced as needed.

After that our technicians fire it up and make sure it runs correctly before we leave.

Using pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where the motor has not run take roughly half an hour after our technicians are there.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in many insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to check yours.
