# Blakelaw: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then put this page down for now, leave the ignition and motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Around Blakelaw, catching it before the engine turns usually means draining and a thorough flush where it stands.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the page explains the why it occurs and the how to prevent it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of newer diesels around Westerhope, like those in Blakelaw, carry on two liquids; your engine takes only the diesel.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There's a filler on each tank.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, the diesel side gets filled constantly.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side is topped up — normally from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

It's in the gap that the slip happens.

## Blakelaw: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

On a drive off Pooley Road before work, or in the car park outside The Balloon on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it is gone, limp mode kicks in.

The old car's filler is where the hand reaches — but a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That's the second factor: a strange vehicle.

A spout-topped bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, once started, keeps on.

It's seconds, whether in East Denton or bang in the heart of Blakelaw.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Fenham or a forecourt in Blakelaw, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue ones are often blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually do not.

- Plenty of cars give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Look inside your fuel flap: plenty of motors carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler isn't by your diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Blaydon? Check with whoever drove it last before leaving, not when the light goes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Tyne and Wear that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Stamfordham Road, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park and switch off properly.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew it. It seems silly. It does the trick.

- Both under one flap? So make sure the lid on your diesel side is still shut before lifting the bottle.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Find at step two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? Then stop just there.

Never go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Blakelaw?

The short order of things, starting with not starting your engine.

On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch the car on.

Filling up with diesel will not thin it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the bottom of your tank, just where the fuel is taken from.

At a forecourt — Esso, Morrisons or another — the attendants will normally help push the vehicle clear, when you ask.

On your own drive around Blakelaw? Then your car stays put.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

On the Central Motorway East, under 3 miles from Blakelaw, that means the next exit.

A short hop across Blakelaw is a smaller job than a run towards Newcastle upon Tyne, under 3 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## What happens when our engineers arrive in Blakelaw

Our engineers come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Hilton Primary Academy, close to Tyneside Badminton Centre or on your own drive.

Both the work and our price rest on three answers — what fluid, which amount, and whether it's run — so our technicians ask.

During the call itself, you hear our price — ahead of dispatch.

After that: draining, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and neither clears away unaided. Hence it matters more.

Filter cleaned or, if needed, replaced; clean diesel in; and then a check of the car.

We do not leave until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your engine has not run take roughly half an hour once our engineers arrive.

The insurer usually wants the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment is on the day, with no deposit.

While we travel, take a look at your policy; plenty include cover for misfuelling.
