# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Bleachgreen

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does the engine.

Chemically, AdBlue is just urea in water.

It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when the system pulls it in.

Caught before the motor has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Bleachgreen.

Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

## What to do straight away, Bleachgreen: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Things to do:

- Take your keys out, and so nobody switches the ignition on.

- Near moving traffic? Then put the hazards on.

- Keep the receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what went in and about how much.

- Tell us a postcode starting CA28 6, or whatever street lies closest, and our van finds you directly — so ring from wherever you stand.

Not to do:

- Moving your vehicle just a short way is no reason to start the engine.

- Many diesels run their pump the moment the ignition goes on, and so leave it off.

- Adding extra diesel does not work: AdBlue separates out rather than blending.

- Even a short stretch up Craig Drive is too far to drive the car.

- No draining it yourself, either, on the roadside.

On a forecourt around Bleachgreen, whether it's the BP or another one, ask the attendants to help you push your car clear of the petrol pump.

On the drive, the vehicle stays just where it is.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not the motor.

From a dedicated reservoir it is fed straight to the exhaust, cleaning what your motor emits.

Neither side fits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and an injection pump can't deal with urea.

Poured in with the diesel, it stays apart rather than mixing — entirely different from fuel.

The pickup takes fuel from the lowest part of the tank, and that is precisely where AdBlue settles: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks.

A car filled on a drive in Scilly Bank overnight and left unstarted counts as the straightforward one. Nothing has sucked the AdBlue up so far — though once the motor runs, that is what goes first, straight from the bottom of that tank.

It causes two kinds of damage from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps labouring on the parts it gets to for as long as it stays there.

A motor left standing around Bleachgreen with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not.

Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and every injector depend on diesel flowing past them, so the water content harms them in its own right.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the Tesco, and this issue is diluted fuel.

Damage only comes from running on it. Mixed into the diesel and left inside that tank, it causes none.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is simply the wrong one.

Because it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option.

Nor can it be thinned, because it separates back out — and the next fill won't rinse away deposits or corrosion. So the flush counts for more here, and turning the key "to see", in the centre of Bleachgreen or out in Parton, does more harm than nearly any other mistake.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Not started? Then the AdBlue waits just inside that tank, the simplest bit of the whole system to clear, wherever your vehicle has stopped across Cumbria.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Bleachgreen: how it ends up there

It's not deliberate. Plenty of vehicles have the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel one, occasionally behind one flap, and muddling them up is easy after dark.

Mostly it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.

A few familiar ways account for most cases.

Rushing, outside Bransty Primary School, after a warning light came on during the school run, a parent tops up the vehicle.

After work, a bottle is tipped in on a drive near Aikbank Road.

Else, in dim light by Sunny Hill, the car is refilled by a driver opening that flap the first time.

Rented motors, new vehicles, fleet motors, or the second car in a family with one of each: the least familiar vehicles get it most.

Wherever you're around Bleachgreen or the rest of Cumbria, it's the same slip and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

## Started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Bleachgreen?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in that tank.

The fuel filter and lines have had it pulled along, and any running time takes it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Maybe coming back from Whitehaven Golf Club, or part way across Bleachgreen, the engine may go rough, smoke, drop pace, flash your dash or cut out.

No restarting to test: pull over when safe, then switch it off.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

Exit the M6, under 50 miles from Bleachgreen, by the first junction and stop somewhere safe, rather than driving on.

How far it went counts. A couple of hundred yards across Bleachgreen to the car park by St James is a very different job from a run towards Carlisle, under 50 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with every mile.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Wherever your car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush once the engine has been started.

Permanent damage is very unusual if it is spotted early.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Bleachgreen?

The vehicle remains where it is, whether that is a road beside Rosehill Theatre, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt around Bleachgreen, and our van comes to it.

The job rests on three answers, and our engineers get first — what got in, the amount, and if the engine has turned over.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one when that tank is drained, on the spot.

Residue from AdBlue won't wash away unaided, so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which matters far more here than with petrol.

Fresh diesel goes in after the filter is flushed — or replaced, if it needs to be — and then the car is tested.

Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once our technicians get there, if the engine has not run.

The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Last, the fuel system is primed with new diesel.

You set off as soon as our technicians have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a driveway around Bleachgreen or in a bay outside Whitehaven.

The test before our technicians go is that it runs smoothly on new diesel.

Since the job is done in full where the vehicle is, a garage never comes into it.

The insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

## About Bleachgreen and where it is

Bleachgreen is a suburban area located on the coast of Cumbria, with an elevation of 89 metres above sea level. Bleachgreen sits near several other small communities, including Quality Corner, Bransty, and Harras, and is approximately 34 miles from the city of Carlisle. Bleachgreen has a population of around 2027 people, who mostly reside in semi-detached houses. Bleachgreen is also relatively distant from London, at a distance of 254.8 miles.

## AdBlue drains in Bleachgreen and across Cumbria

AdBlue jobs around Bleachgreen are passed to teams that serve the places near it — Quality Corner, Bransty as well as Harras — and most of Cumbria beyond, throughout CA postcodes.

If you're close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask instead of assuming.

Bleachgreen is a residential suburb, and a call-out drain suits it: whether your car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our technicians drain it where it is, and so it never needs to be moved to us.

## Bleachgreen: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Every job is different, so not one fixed price is fair.

The price changes first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that was put in. After that it depends on where the car is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight space behind Parton Village Hall.

That's why every call from Bleachgreen starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and whether it's run.

Once they are known, a range turns into one firm number.

Our quote is quoted during the call, before a van leaves; payment happens on the day, by card or over the phone, and nothing upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.

## Alongside the car in Bleachgreen, still?

Right now, the best thing to do with your vehicle is to not touch it.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us it is AdBlue, roughly how much, and if it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Bleachgreen or anywhere in Cumbria.
