# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Blockley: Why It Occurs

Pause reading for a moment if your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and call 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when your engine hasn't run, it is drained and thoroughly cleaned where the car sits around Blockley.

Here in advance? Then the rest covers how it comes about and what to stop it happening at all.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Plenty of newer diesels around Broad Campden, as well as Blockley, carry on two liquids; your engine takes just your diesel.

Your exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the fumes to fresh it, from a separate tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in on every forecourt call-out, again and again.

The AdBlue side is filled far less frequently, normally from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the error lives.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs around Blockley

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a driveway off High Street before work, or in the car park at The Crown Inn on the way home: that's where the rushed top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle warns you, and once it's gone, limp mode kicks in.

Then the car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, once started, keeps on.

Whether it occurs in Draycott or the middle of Blockley, it's the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A few seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Aston Magna or a forecourt around Blockley.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.

- Look inside your fuel flap: plenty of vehicles carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- Can't find it beside your diesel filler? In that case look beneath the bonnet or inside your boot — the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Moreton-In-Marsh? Ask whoever drove the vehicle last before you set off, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

On the day the warning appears — wherever it is around Gloucestershire — a routine to follow.

- Not in a rush on the side of Bell Bank, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park and switch off first.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start your car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Spot at step two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there.

Leave out stage five altogether.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Blockley?

Brief order, then. First: the engine stays unstarted.

Keep your ignition off too, since on many diesels switching it on by itself starts the pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is drawn from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

At a forecourt — Texaco, Esso or another — the staff will normally help push the vehicle clear, if you ask.

If you are on your own drive in Blockley, leave the car where it sits.

Already run? Pull over once it is safe, then turn off.

Come off the M5 — under 25 miles out of Blockley — at the next exit.

Distance matters — a quick hop across Blockley is a smaller job than driving under 25 miles to Gloucester — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## What occurs when we get there in Blockley

Our technicians come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Blockley Church of England Primary School, near Little Village Hall or on your own driveway.

We ask what went in, about how much, and if it has run, since those replies decide this work and the quote.

Nobody heads out before you've had our quote by phone.

Emptying the tank comes next, then a full flush of the fuel system.

More than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: crystals build up, some metals corrode, and none of it clears away on its own, however long it is left.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

Before we leave, we fire it up and confirm that it is running correctly.

Unstarted vehicles usually need a half-hour visit from the moment we arrive. The kit is safe on a live filling station, and quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Your insurer will ask for an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours once this job is done. Payment is on the day, with no deposit.

While we travel, take a look at your insurance documents; plenty include cover for misfuelling.

Fastest of all: quote a GL56 9 postcode to the van.

The car remains put.

Anywhere it stands — beside St Peter & St Paul, in a layby en route to Mill Dene Garden, at home — that is where it is emptied.

Assuming won't help behind War Memorial, close to a border, or somewhere awkward to describe; phone and ask.
