# How It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Boddam

Pause reading a minute if your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when your engine hasn't run, it is emptied and thoroughly cleaned where the vehicle is in Boddam.

Reading in advance? Then the rest covers how it happens and what to prevent it ever happening.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

No single fluid but two: that's how many newer diesels near Boddam and Whitehill run, with diesel feeding the engine.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, your diesel side gets filled constantly.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less commonly, usually from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

The slip lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Boddam: how it occurs

It is seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Hurry comes from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a driveway off Seaview Road, or on the way home in the car park outside Rocksley Inn.

New-to-you cars are second, too. Rentals, new motors and company motors put their fillers in new places, and habit reaches for the cap used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

Stirling Village or the heart of Boddam: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a drive in Meethill or a forecourt around Boddam.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Trust the cap, not its position.

- Plenty of vehicles give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Look inside the fuel flap: plenty of motors have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- Can't see it next to your diesel inlet? Then look beneath the bonnet or in your boot — the owner's manual says which.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside the nearest station, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Aberdeenshire that is.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Manse Terrace.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where the two sit under a flap, make sure it is closed before lifting the bottle.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Before you start the car, shut the cap and look a second time that the diesel cap never came off.

Spot at stage two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? So stop right there.

Leave out stage five entirely.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Boddam?

Don't start your engine: that is where the short order of things starts.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels the moment the ignition goes on — so leave it off.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

Ask the attendants to help roll the car away from the pump if you're on a forecourt — the Shell, the Esso or anywhere else.

If you're on your own drive in Boddam, leave the vehicle where it sits.

When your engine has run by now, pull over safely and switch it off.

Boddam lies over 50 miles from the M90; on it, use the next exit.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Aberdeen, under 50 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Boddam.

## Boddam: what takes place when we arrive

Our van comes to your car anywhere it has come to rest — your own drive, near Boddam WW1 War Memorial, or by the local primary school.

We ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it has run, because those answers determine the work and the quote.

You hear that price by phone, before anybody sets off.

After that: a drain, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

The filter flushed or, if it must be, replaced; fresh diesel in; and then a check of the car.

Before we go, we start the car and check that it's running properly.

Unstarted vehicles usually mean a half-hour job after the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a live forecourt, and quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

The insurer usually wants the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

Before we get there, have a look at your policy; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.

Throughout AB postcodes, the vans that cover Boddam — a coastal village — work the nearby places too, Invernettie and Sandfordhill included.

Give a postcode that starts AB42 3, and our van arrives quickest.

Shifting the vehicle is not necessary.

Anywhere it sits — beside Boddam WW2 War Memorial, in a lay-by heading to Dales Park, on a drive — that is where it gets emptied.

Awkward to explain, like the back of United Free Church? Close to a county line? Asking beats guessing, and so ring.

## In short, for Boddam motorists

Read the cap before you tip.
