# Why It Occurs and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Booses Green

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and your ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a full flush, carried out just where your car sits around Booses Green, is normally all it needs when found before your engine runs.

The rest of this page explains why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

No single fluid but two: that is what many newer diesels near Booses Green and Countess Cross carry, with diesel for your motor.

Your exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the gas to fresh it, from its own tank.

There's a filler for each tank.

Under one flap, side by side: that's the arrangement on a lot of vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

The diesel side is topped up at the pump all the time.

Far less regularly, the AdBlue side is topped up — normally from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank take place around Booses Green?

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from your car, and letting it run out means limp mode — so a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Shellcroft, perhaps outside Five Bells on the way home after work.

The old car's filler is where your hand reaches — but a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That's a second thing: a new car.

A spout-topped bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after started, keeps on.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Booses Green or out in Colne Engaine.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Be it a Booses Green forecourt or a driveway out in Don Johns, spend a couple of seconds on these before anything goes in.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Trust the cap, not where it sits.

- Plenty of cars fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says where it lives when the filler is not next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Chappel & Wakes Colne.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

The day the light goes on, wherever in Essex, follow this routine.

- Pull in somewhere level, engine off, with time in hand — not rushing on the side of Rainbow Way.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where the two sit under a flap, make sure it's closed before lifting the bottle.

- Finish once that tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; before that, pour gently through the own spout.

- Shut the cap, and check once more — confirm your diesel filler stayed closed the whole time. After that, start the car.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Stage five stays out.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Booses Green?

Short list, then. Top of that: your motor remains off.

Leave your ignition off as well, since on many diesels it alone starts the pump.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it's the Esso or the Mount Hill Garage, ask the attendants to help push the vehicle clear of the petrol pump.

If you are on your own driveway around Booses Green, leave it where it stands.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your motor has already run.

Booses Green lies under 25 miles from the M11; on it, take the first junction.

Distance counts — a short hop across Booses Green is a smaller job than heading under 10 miles to Colchester — so say roughly how far it went.

## What happens when our technicians arrive around Booses Green

We come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Colne Engaine Church of England Primary School, close to St Andrew's Church or on your own drive.

Our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it's run, because those replies settle this work and the quote.

Nobody sets off before you've heard our quote by phone.

Emptying your tank comes next, then a full flush of the system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

The filter cleaned or, if needed, replaced; clean diesel in; and then a test of the car.

Before we leave, our engineers fire it up and make sure that it's running smoothly.

If your engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

No money in advance; you settle up that day. At the end, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

It's worth looking at your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.
