# Borough Green: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then set this page aside for now, leave your ignition and motor off, and call 0333 366 0103.

Around Borough Green, finding it before the engine turns normally leaves a drain and a full flush on the spot.

The remainder of this page explains why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't — handy if you are reading ahead of time.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

No single liquid but two: that is what many modern diesels near Borough Green and Wrotham run, with diesel for the engine.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Every tank comes with a filler of its own.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is topped up at the pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less often, normally from a bottle, and usually by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake grows in that gap between the two.

## Borough Green: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Haste comes from the warning. The vehicle warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a driveway off Wrotham Road, or heading home in the car park outside Black Horse.

Then the vehicle is strange. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Third, the bottle fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in just as readily, and after the tip starts, nothing stops it.

Platt or the middle of Borough Green: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Claygate Cross or a forecourt around Borough Green, check these. They take a few seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it instead of going by position.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many cars, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside the fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Look for it.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler is if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Borough Green & Wrotham.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

The day the light comes on, anywhere in Kent, follow this routine.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Western Road.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap works — once you've located the filler and read it.

- The diesel cap remains on. When both sit under a flap, make sure it's shut before the bottle comes up.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, and check once more — confirm your diesel cap stayed closed throughout. Only then, start the car.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Leave out step five entirely.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Borough Green?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your engine.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the car on.

Topping up with diesel will not weaken it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the base of the tank, right where fuel is drawn from.

On a forecourt — Esso, Shell or any other — the staff will usually help push the vehicle away, if you ask.

Where your engine has run by now, stop safely then switch the car off.

## Borough Green: what occurs when we turn up

By Borough Green Primary School, near Catholic Church of St Joseph or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

We ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it's run, since the replies decide this work and the quote.

You get that price on the phone, before anyone sets off.

Your system is then rinsed thoroughly, after your tank is emptied.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Testing is at the end: before that, clean diesel goes in, and the filter is flushed or changed if necessary.

Next we fire it up and make sure it runs smoothly before leaving.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour after we get there, provided your engine has not run — and the pumps we use are safe on a live forecourt and quiet at night outside a house.

Your insurer usually wants an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
