# Bostall Heath: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Pause here for a moment when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

Around Bostall Heath, finding it before your engine turns usually means draining and a full flush on the spot.

The remainder of this page explains why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't — useful if you're reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads round Bostall Heath and West Heath carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.

There is a filler on every tank.

Many of cars have a single flap for both, whereas others put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

Filling the diesel side at the pump happens constantly.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less regularly, normally from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

Mistakes happen in that gap between them.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens around Bostall Heath

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the vehicle, and letting it run out leads to limp mode — so a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Commonwealth Way, perhaps outside The Abbey Arms on the way home after work.

Unfamiliar cars are next, as well. Hire cars, new cars and company vehicles place their fillers differently, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour once it has started.

Whether it happens in Lesnes Abbey or the middle of Bostall Heath, it's the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Upper Belvedere or a forecourt around Bostall Heath, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Read the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.

- Check inside your fuel flap: plenty of vehicles have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows where it is if the filler isn't next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Abbey Wood? Check with the person who drove the vehicle last before leaving, not when the light goes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Greater London that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Knee Hill, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park then switch off properly.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap works — once you have located your filler and read it.

- The two behind a single flap? Then make sure the lid on your diesel filler is still shut ahead of lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Skip stage five altogether.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Bostall Heath?

Brief list, then. First: your engine stays off.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels as soon as the ignition is switched on — and so keep it off.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is pulled from.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it is the BP or the another forecourt nearby, ask the attendants to help push the vehicle clear of the petrol pump.

Your own driveway around Bostall Heath is where it should stay.

When the engine has run already, stop somewhere safe and switch the car off.

The next exit is the place to come off if you're on the M25, under 10 miles from Bostall Heath.

Distance counts — a short hop across Bostall Heath is a smaller job than driving under 10 miles towards London — so say roughly how far it went.

## Bostall Heath: what happens when our engineers turn up

Outside Alexander McLeod Primary School, close to William Morris memorial or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, our technicians come to it.

Those answers settle this work and the price, so our engineers ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it has run.

You get that price by phone, before anybody sets off.

The fuel system is then purged thoroughly, after your tank is cleared.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

Testing is last: before that, clean diesel goes in, and the filter is flushed or replaced if necessary.

Next our engineers fire it up and check it runs properly before we leave.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour after we get there, provided the motor has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet after dark outside a house.

Your insurer will ask for the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both once this job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

It's worth looking at your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.
