# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Boundstone

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, leave the engine off then keep the ignition off.

Urea dissolved in water is all AdBlue is.

Being water-based, it will not ignite and never combines with diesel; damage only comes once the pump begins pulling it.

If your motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually emptied and thoroughly rinsed where your car sits around Boundstone.

Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Boundstone: the first few minutes

Things to do:

- Keys out — that way nobody can switch anything on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all close.

- Which fluid, and roughly what volume? Save the bottle or the receipt, and our engineers can see.

- Ring just where you are. Say a GU10 4 postcode or the nearest street sign, and no one has to hunt for you.

Don't do these:

- Moving your vehicle even a few yards is no reason to start the engine.

- Your ignition stays off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to run the fuel pump.

- Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Never drive the car anywhere, not even a short stretch along Boundstone Road.

- By the road, do not try emptying it yourself.

The attendants on duty at any Boundstone forecourt — the Texaco among them — will normally help rolling it aside if you ask.

At your own drive, don't touch it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the engine.

Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it's sprayed into the exhaust, and there it cleans the gas.

Neither side fits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and an injection pump cannot deal with urea.

Inside a diesel tank it acts very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

It drops, because it's denser than diesel, and settles low where the intake draws its fuel from.

When the pump runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to go through. Before then it sits beneath the diesel, and that is how a vehicle filled in Wrecclesham yesterday and not switched on stays the straightforward case, as long as no one turns your key.

Two kinds of harm follow from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it strands urea that hardens in filter elements and narrow passages; and, because it attacks some metals, every part it reaches suffers for as long as it stays in there.

Overnight, a car parked around Boundstone with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; if it's just inside the tank, it doesn't.

And there's the water: it offers no protection to the components that rely on it most — the high-pressure pump and each injector.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's often worse than petrol

An issue of thin fuel is what you end up with after filling a diesel with petrol from the BP.

It mixes with your diesel, and while it's inside your tank it does no harm; the harm comes from running your motor on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is simply the wrong one.

It can't just be run through, because it doesn't burn.

Crystals and corrosion stay after the following fill, and AdBlue separates back out of the diesel, and so watering it won't work. That is why the flush matters more, and turning your key "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than almost any other slip — in Rowledge or the heart of Boundstone alike.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Not started? Then the AdBlue sits just inside your tank, the simplest bit of the entire system to empty, wherever your vehicle has come to rest in Surrey.

## Boundstone: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel one, occasionally behind one flap — may look the same. No one intends it; plenty of layouts allow it.

Mostly it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

It tends to take place in a couple of familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside St Peter's CofE Primary School.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Gardner's Hill Road.

One more pattern: dim light, a pub car park outside The Bat and Ball, and someone using that flap the first time.

It takes place most in the vehicles motorists know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Wherever around Surrey, Boundstone as well, the slip doesn't change, and neither does the first step: leave it off.

## Already started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Boundstone?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

With any running, it travels to the injection pump and every injector, having passed through the fuel filter and pipework.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard lights or cutting out: each might show up, perhaps midway across Boundstone or coming back from Langhams Recreation Ground.

Stop when it is safe. Switch off. Leave the car off instead of restarting it to check.

Each start pulls more of that through.

On the M3, under 10 miles from Boundstone, the first junction is where to exit, and somewhere safe is where to park — not carrying on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Boundstone to the car park by Wrecclesham Community Centre is a very different job from a run towards Winchester, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with each mile.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Our engineers do all of the flushing where the vehicle has ended up, and once your engine has been started there is more of it.

Very seldom does it leave lasting damage when it is caught early.

## Draining AdBlue in a diesel in Boundstone: what it takes

A street beside St. Peter's Church, a drive, a layby or a filling station: anywhere your car has come to rest in Boundstone, we travel to it.

The job rests on three answers, which our technicians get before all else — which fluid went in, the amount, and whether the motor has run.

Then that tank is drained where the car stands, so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

A full flush matters far more with AdBlue than with petrol, since residue will not wash away by itself.

Clean diesel goes in after the filter is cleaned — or replaced, if it needs to be — and then the vehicle is tested.

About half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs when your motor hasn't run.

Quiet enough to use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Finally, the system is primed with fresh diesel.

Then we start the engine and you drive off, whether from a parking bay at Farnham or a driveway in Boundstone.

The test before our engineers go is that it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

No garage is needed at any stage, with the entire job done on the spot.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

## About Boundstone and where it is

Boundstone is a village in Surrey, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 111 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Boundstone lies near the villages of Middle Bourne, Shortheath, and The Bourne, and is approximately 23.6 miles from Winchester. Boundstone is also within commuting distance of London, being around 36.6 miles from the capital. Boundstone has a population of around 905 residents.

## AdBlue drains across Surrey, Boundstone included

AdBlue call-outs around Boundstone are passed to vans that cover the towns around it — Middle Bourne, Shortheath plus The Bourne — and much of Surrey further out, throughout GU postcodes.

If you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask rather than assuming.

Wherever your vehicle stands — your drive at home, a side street, a parking area, a forecourt — our technicians drain it on the spot, with no need to bring it to us; that suits Boundstone, a village, well.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Boundstone?

Each job differs, and so no fixed price is honest.

What shifts the cost is, firstly, whether your engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and finally where the car is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Aldridge Theatre.

Before any figure, never after, each call from Boundstone begins with three checks: the fuel, the amount, and whether it ran.

Given those replies, the range shrinks to a single fixed figure.

Our price is given during the call, before anyone leaves; settling up happens on the day, by card or over the phone, and nothing upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.

## In Boundstone and still beside the car?

Leaving the vehicle alone is, then, the most useful move open to you.

Keys out; engine and ignition off.

Say it was AdBlue, about how big an amount, and whether the engine ran, on 0333 366 0103. After that Petrol in Diesel takes over, in Boundstone or wherever within Surrey.
