# Bowbridge: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, leave your motor off and keep the ignition off.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does starts when the fuel system pulls it in.

In Bowbridge, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before your motor runs normally comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, just where your car is.

Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

## Bowbridge, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do at once

Do these:

- So nobody can turn your ignition on, pull your keys out.

- If you are anywhere near moving traffic, put your hazards on.

- So you can tell us which fluid it was and roughly how much, save the receipt or the empty bottle.

- Our van finds you fastest with a postcode starting GL5 2, or simply the name of a street close by, so call from the spot.

Never:

- No starting your engine — not briefly, not to shift the vehicle.

- The ignition stays off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to start your fuel pump.

- No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue will not blend, so it is wasted.

- Even a short stretch along Thrupp Lane is too far to drive it.

- Beside the road, do not try draining it on your own.

The attendants on duty at any Bowbridge filling station — the BP among them — will normally help pushing it clear if you ask.

On the drive, the vehicle stays exactly where it was left.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your engine.

Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it is fed into your exhaust, where it cleans the fumes.

Nothing in an injection pump is designed for this liquid — and none of that was intended to travel that way.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once poured in, will not. Its behaviour is not at all like fuel's.

It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from.

The first thing the system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Stroud Hill last night, and has not been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

After it is pulled in, the damage comes in two forms.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps labouring on the parts it gets to for as long as it stays there.

Where the AdBlue has reached the pipework, waiting till morning in Bowbridge leaves things worse. Inside the tank alone, time costs nothing.

Then there is the water: it brings no lubrication to the parts that rely on it the most — the injection pump and every injector.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

Top up a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the Tesco, and the issue is thinned fuel.

No damage is done as long as it sits unused, mixed into the diesel — only once your motor runs on it.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable substance.

Since it does not burn, running it through isn't an option.

Deposits and corrosion stay after the following tankful, and AdBlue separates again from the diesel, and so watering it won't help. That is why the flush matters so much, and turning your key "to see" does more harm here than nearly any other slip — in Bagpath or the heart of Bowbridge equally.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Emptying a tank is the simplest job on a fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue remains in it — anywhere in Gloucestershire your car has stopped.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Bowbridge

It is not deliberate. Plenty of vehicles keep the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel inlet, occasionally under a single flap, and mixing them up is easy in poor light.

It usually happens outside the house, from a container grabbed en route home, rather than at the forecourt.

The ways it occurs are few and familiar.

Hurrying, outside Thrupp School, after a warning light came on during the school run, someone tops up the car.

Near London Road, someone pours a container in at home in the evening.

Or your car is topped up in the car park outside The Bowbridge Arms, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

It crops up the most in a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the spare vehicle of a home with one of each fuel types — the cars drivers know least.

Wherever in Gloucestershire, Bowbridge as well, the mistake does not change, and neither does the first step: keep it switched off.

## Started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Bowbridge?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then.

With any running time, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and each injector, after passing via the filter and lines.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard lights or stalling: each might show up, maybe midway across Bowbridge or coming back from Arundel Mill Ponds.

When you safely can, pull over then turn it off — without restarting to test.

Every start pulls more of it through.

If you were on the M5, under 10 miles from Bowbridge, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere sensible instead of pressing on.

Each mile pushes the AdBlue further into the system. That is why a hop across Bowbridge to park near In Transit and a drive of under 10 miles for Gloucester are very different jobs.

Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once your engine has run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where your car has stopped.

Permanent damage is very uncommon when it is noticed soon.

## Bowbridge: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

The car stays put, whether that's a road beside Trinity Rooms, a drive, a layby or a forecourt around Bowbridge, and our van travels to it.

The job depends on three answers, which our technicians ask for before all else — which fluid went in, the amount, and if the engine has run.

On the spot, your tank is then drained, and all of the contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one.

With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing counts: the whole system is flushed right through because what remains won't wash away unaided.

Next, your filter: flushed, or replaced when it must be. After that fresh diesel, then a test of the vehicle.

Roughly half an hour on site is usual for most jobs where your engine has not run.

The equipment is explosion-proof, so a live forecourt is no problem, and it's hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Clean diesel goes in to bleed the fuel system, and that's the final step.

Whether it's a parking space outside Stroud or a drive around Bowbridge, that is where we fire it up and you drive off.

Before leaving, our technicians check it's running correctly with clean diesel in.

No workshop is needed at any point, with the whole job done then and there.

At the end, you are given the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

## About Bowbridge and where it is

Bowbridge is a suburban area located on the riverside in Gloucestershire, with a relatively low elevation of 57 metres. Bowbridge sits near the city of Gloucester, approximately 9 miles away, and is close to nearby places such as Thrupp and Butterrow. ## AdBlue drains across Gloucestershire, Bowbridge included

AdBlue jobs around Bowbridge go to teams that cover the towns near it — Thrupp, Butterrow plus Mount Pleasant — and most of Gloucestershire further out, across GL postcodes.

Guessing won't help by a county line or anywhere tricky to describe; phone and check.

Bowbridge is a residential suburb, and a call-out drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, we drain it where it is, and so it never needs to be moved to us.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Bowbridge: the cost of fixing it

No flat price would be fair, because every job is different.

Whether the motor has been running, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the cost. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the location of your car, because an open driveway is simpler for our van to reach safely than a tight spot behind Holy Trinity.

That is why each call from Bowbridge starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and whether it's run.

Those replies shrink the range down to a single number.

You hear that price by phone, before anybody sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Check your policy whilst we're on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.

## Still alongside the vehicle in Bowbridge?

Not touching the car is, then, the best move open to you.

Motor off, keys out, ignition off.

Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us it is AdBlue, roughly how much, and if it's run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Bowbridge or anywhere around Gloucestershire.
