# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Bowgreave? Keep It Switched Off

Engine off, ignition off: that is how you start if AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank.

Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue.

It does not burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when the system pulls it in.

If the motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually emptied and thoroughly cleaned where the car stands around Bowgreave.

No step comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

## Your next steps right now, Bowgreave: AdBlue in your diesel tank

To do:

- Keys out — then no one can power anything on.

- Near moving traffic? Then put your hazards on.

- Keep the till receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what went in and roughly how much.

- Give us a postcode starting PR3 1, or whatever street lies closest, and the van reaches you straight — so call from wherever you stand.

Not to do:

- Do not start the engine, even for a moment to shift the car.

- Do not switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Adding extra diesel does not help: AdBlue settles out rather than thinning.

- Do not drive it anywhere, not even a short distance down Topiary Gardens.

- No draining it yourself, either, on the verge.

The attendants on duty at any Bowgreave forecourt — the R Dewhurst Coal Merchant included — will normally help rolling it clear if you ask.

On your own driveway, do not move it at all.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it.

Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.

It does not combine. Once it's poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves nothing like fuel.

It drops, since it's denser than diesel, and pools down where the intake takes its supply from.

Simplest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in Nook overnight and has not turned since. The liquid waits at the base of the tank, untouched — though it would be first through if your motor starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

It does two kinds of harm from there.

It attacks some metals found in fuel systems, working on any part it touches till it is removed completely. And when the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and settle in narrow passages.

Lines holding AdBlue mean damage overnight for a car parked around Bowgreave. Only inside that tank, it stays stable.

The water in it causes damage of its own: the high-pressure pump and your injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it is frequently worse than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the BP and you have a fault of thin fuel.

Harm just comes from running on it. Blended into the diesel and left in the tank, it causes nothing.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is simply the wrong one.

Since it does not burn, running it through isn't an option.

It doesn't stay mixed, so it can't be weakened. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the car is in Stubbins or the middle of Bowgreave.

As with petrol, there is good news.

Never run? Then the AdBlue waits just inside the tank, the simplest bit of the whole system to clear, wherever your car has stopped across Lancashire.

## Bowgreave: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It is not deliberate. Many cars have the AdBlue cap beside the diesel inlet, occasionally behind a single flap, and mixing them up is simple in poor light.

Usually it's not the filling station: someone picks up a container driving home and pours it in at home.

It tends to take place in a few familiar ways.

The top-up is hurried outside St Mary and St Michael's Catholic Primary School, Garstang, because the dash lit up with a warning while the kids were taken in.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Gryersdale Drive.

Otherwise, in dim light outside Brockholes Arms, the vehicle gets topped up by a driver opening that flap for the first time.

The least known cars get it the most — hire cars, brand-new ones, company cars, and the other motor in a home with one of each fuel types.

Keep it off: that is the first step to the same slip, wherever around Bowgreave or the rest of Lancashire you are.

## Started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Bowgreave?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in that tank.

It has been drawn through the fuel filter and the fuel lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has reached your high-pressure pump and the injectors.

You may notice your engine running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Garstang Golf Course or halfway across Bowgreave.

Pull over when safe. Switch off. Leave it off instead of testing it again.

Each start pulls more of it through.

On the M6, under a mile from Bowgreave, the first junction is where to exit, and anywhere sensible is where to stop — not driving on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Bowgreave to the car park by Catterall Village Hall is a very different job from a run towards Preston, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with every mile.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Our technicians do all of the flushing where the car has stopped, and once your engine has been run there is more of it.

Very rarely does it leave lasting damage if it is noticed early.

## Bowgreave: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

We come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped around Bowgreave: a side street close to St Mary & St Michael, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

The job rests on three replies, and our engineers get first — which fluid went in, the amount, and if your engine has run.

Right there, your tank is then emptied, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one.

A full flush counts far more after AdBlue than with petrol, since what remains will not clear out on its own.

A test of the car follows at the end, after fresh diesel goes in and the fuel filter gets cleaned or, where necessary, replaced.

If the motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our engineers are there.

The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Clean diesel goes in to prime the system, and that's the last step.

Starting the car comes next, and then you set off from where the vehicle is parked, at Salwick or on a drive around Bowgreave.

It is checked on new diesel to confirm it runs smoothly before our engineers go.

The entire job is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers want.

Assuming doesn't help close to a county line or somewhere tricky to pin down; ring and check.

A mobile service fits Bowgreave, a village: there's no need to bring the car to us, because our technicians empty it on the spot, in a driveway, a side street, a parking area or a forecourt.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Bowgreave: the cost of fixing it

No single figure could be fair, since every job differs.

Whether your engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the cost. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the location of the car, because an open drive is easier for a van to reach safely than a tight gap behind Catterall and Kirkland Memorial Hall.

Which fluid went in, how much, and whether it ran: every Bowgreave call begins by asking exactly that, before any figure, not after.

The answers turn a range into a straight quote.

Before anyone sets off, you are told the price on the phone. Then payment is on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing in advance.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## Next to the car in Bowgreave, still?
