# How It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Bracken Hill

Pause here a minute if your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when your engine has not turned, it's drained and thoroughly flushed where your vehicle is around Bracken Hill.

The remainder of this page covers why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't — useful if you are reading ahead of time.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Many modern diesels on the roads around Bracken Hill and Kitson Hill carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has a filler of its own.

Under one flap, side by side: that's the layout on a lot of cars. On others, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Filling your diesel side at the pump happens constantly.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less commonly, normally from a bottle, and usually by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the error lives.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Bracken Hill: how it happens

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the car, and running out means limp mode — so a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Bishops Way, perhaps at White Gate on the way home that evening.

Then the vehicle is strange. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

No part stops the pour after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Moor Top or the middle of Bracken Hill: it is the same few seconds either way.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Check these before pouring, at a forecourt around Bracken Hill or a driveway out in Stocks Bank. Seconds, no more.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Trust the cap, not its position.

- Plenty of vehicles give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Look inside the fuel flap: many vehicles carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler is not by your diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Mirfield, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

Anywhere around West Yorkshire the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Pull in somewhere level, engine off, with time to spare — never hurried on the side of Stocks Bank Road.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, perhaps, but it does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where the two sit under a flap, confirm it's closed before lifting the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Spot at step two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? Then stop just there.

Never carry on to step five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Bracken Hill?

Short order, then. First: your engine remains off.

Keep the ignition off too, because on plenty of diesels it by itself starts your pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is sucked from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

On a forecourt — Shell, Esso or another — the attendants will usually help push the vehicle clear, if you ask.

If you are on your own drive around Bracken Hill, leave the car where it sits.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Come off the M62 — under 3 miles out of Bracken Hill — at the first junction.

A short hop across Bracken Hill is a smaller job than a run towards Bradford, under 10 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## When we get there in Bracken Hill, what occurs?

By Battyeford CofE (VC) Primary School, near Christ the King or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Those answers settle this work and our price, and so we ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it has run.

On the phone call itself, you hear our price — before anything else.

Next: draining, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more here than with petrol.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

We don't go until it has been started and is running correctly.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour once we get there, provided your engine has not run — and the pumps we use are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet at night outside a house.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

Over WF postcodes, the vans that cover Bracken Hill — a residential suburb — work the nearby locations too, Battyeford and Nab among them.

Fastest of all: give a WF14 0 postcode to our van.

There's no need to shift your car.

Wherever it sits — beside Church of the Resurrection, in a layby en route to Brook Shrogg, on a drive — that's where it is cleared.

Ring and ask instead of assuming if you're close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Dumb Steeple.

## In short, for Bracken Hill people

Read the cap before you pour.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless, leave the car off then call 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it sits, anywhere across West Yorkshire.
