# Brackens: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and the ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when the motor hasn't turned, it is drained and fully purged where your car sits around Brackens.

Not happened yet? Further down, the page explains the reasons it happens and the ways to avoid it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Diesel goes to your motor — but plenty of newer diesels driven about Brackens and St Marys carry another liquid too.

Your exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the fumes to fresh it, from a separate tank.

There is a filler for every tank.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the arrangement on many cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

At the pump, your diesel side is topped up constantly.

Much less frequently, the AdBlue side gets filled — normally from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

The mistake grows in the gap between the two.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens around Brackens

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from your car, and letting it run dry leads to limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, maybe before work off St Martin Avenue, or at Nine Maidens on the way home that evening.

Next, the hand goes for the cap it knew on the old car — since a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

No part halts the tip after it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Brackens or out in Strathmartine.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Whether a Brackens forecourt or a drive out in Downfield, take a couple of seconds over these before anything is poured in.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Go by the cap, not its position.

- On many vehicles, the size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- Can't see it beside the diesel inlet? Then check below the bonnet or in your boot — the handbook will say where.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Dundee? Check with whoever drove it last before leaving, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Dundee City that is.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Strathmartine Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before starting your car, close the cap and look a second time that your diesel cap never opened off.

Discover during the second or third stage that AdBlue went in the diesel tank? That is where you stop.

Never carry on to step five.

## Brackens: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

The short order of things, beginning with not starting the engine.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels as soon as the ignition is switched on — so leave it off.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it's the Asda or the Tesco, ask the attendants to help roll the vehicle clear of the pump.

Your own drive in Brackens is where it stays.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your engine has already run.

Brackens lies under 25 miles from the M90; on it, use the next exit.

Distance matters — a short hop across Brackens makes a smaller job than driving under 5 miles to Dundee — so say about how far it went.

## When we get there around Brackens, what happens?

By the local primary school, near Strathmartine War Memorial or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our technicians come to it.

The answers determine the work and the price, so our engineers ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it's run.

You get that quote by phone, before anyone heads out.

Next: a drain, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that counts more here than with petrol.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

The engine is started next and tested to confirm it runs correctly, all before our engineers go.

Using pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the engine has not run take roughly half an hour once we are there.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Before we get there, take a look at your insurance documents; plenty include cover for misfuelling.
