# Brackmills: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Pause here for a moment if your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when the motor hasn't turned, it's drained and fully purged where the car sits in Brackmills.

The remainder of this page covers why it takes place and how to ensure it doesn't — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads round Brackmills and Abington Vale carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

Your exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the fumes to fresh it, from its own tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

Other vehicles keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot more have the two side by side behind one flap.

Filling your diesel side at the pump goes on all the time.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less commonly, normally from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## Brackmills: how AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Kilvey Road before work, or in the car park outside The Britannia on the way home.

The old car's filler is where the hand goes — but a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That is the second thing: an unfamiliar car.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

It takes seconds, whether in Great Houghton or right in the centre of Brackmills.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A few seconds is all these take — so check them before you tip anything, on a drive in Abington or a forecourt in Brackmills.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows which it is when your filler isn't next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Whoever had it before knows. Ask as you collect a rental or company car — at Northampton's car park, perhaps — rather than once the light appears.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Northamptonshire that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Salthouse Road, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park and switch off properly.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- The two under one flap? Then confirm the cap on the diesel filler stays shut before raising the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Never carry on to stage five.

## Brackmills: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Don't start the engine: that is how the short order of things starts.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the car on.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

The attendants at JET, Morrisons or another forecourt will usually help pushing your car away if asked.

At home around Brackmills? Then the vehicle stays where it is.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Come off the M1 — under 3 miles out of Brackmills — at the next junction.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Brackmills is smaller a job than a trip of under 15 miles towards Milton Keynes, so say.

## When we get there in Brackmills, what happens?

The van reaches the vehicle wherever it stopped — your own drive, beside Northampton Active, or by Hardingstone Academy.

What fluid went in, the amount, and whether it ran: our engineers ask since those answers set both work and quote.

During the phone call itself, you hear our quote — ahead of anything else.

After that: draining, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

Much more than with petrol, it counts here: the crystals form, some metals are attacked, and nothing washes out unaided, however long it sits.

The filter cleaned or, where needed, swapped; clean diesel in; and then a check of your vehicle.

Before we go, we start the engine and confirm that it's running correctly.

Unrun cars mostly need a half-hour job after arrival. The equipment is safe on a busy forecourt, and hushed enough for a driveway after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we are on the way.
