# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Bradford

If AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank, leave the engine off and leave your ignition off.

Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

Being water-based, it won't ignite and won't blend with diesel; trouble only comes once your pump starts pulling it.

If your motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally emptied and carefully rinsed where the vehicle sits around Bradford.

First, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

## What to do straight away, Bradford: AdBlue in the diesel tank

Things to do:

- Remove your keys, which stops someone turning the power on.

- If you're anywhere near moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.

- The empty bottle or your receipt tells us the product and the quantity, so do not bin it out.

- Tell us a postcode starting M40 7, or whatever street is nearest, and the van finds you straight — so ring wherever you stand.

Do not do these:

- No starting your engine — not briefly, not to shift the vehicle.

- Don't switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Pouring in more diesel doesn't help: AdBlue settles out rather than blending.

- Never drive it anywhere, not even a short distance along Bradford Road.

- Draining the tank on your own by the road isn't one to try.

The attendants on duty at any Bradford forecourt — the Asda among them — will normally lend a hand rolling it clear if you ask.

On the drive, the vehicle stays just where it was left.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Made for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in your engine.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it's sprayed into your exhaust, and there it treats the gas.

Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

It does not combine. Once it's tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts nothing like diesel.

Heavier than diesel, it sinks and pools below it — the same spot the pickup draws from.

The first thing the fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Newton Heath last night, and has not been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

Two kinds of damage follow from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps running on the parts it hits for as long as it stays there.

By daybreak, a car sitting in Bradford with AdBlue in its lines gets worse; if it's just inside the tank, nothing changes.

Diesel protects the injection pump and every injector as it passes; water offers none of that, which is a separate kind of damage.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

Fill a diesel with petrol in error at the Shell, and this problem is diluted fuel.

No damage is done as long as it sits put, mixed into the diesel — only when the motor runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is an issue of the wrong substance altogether.

Not burning, it cannot just be run through.

Whether the vehicle sits in Clayton or the centre of Bradford, firing it up "to see" costs more with AdBlue than almost any other error, and the flush counts more. Why: it won't remain mixed, and so watering it down is impossible; and crystals and corrosion survive the next fill.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

If the engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still in that tank, and your tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Greater Manchester your car is sitting.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Bradford

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of cars sits right next to the diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

It usually happens outside the house, from a bottle bought en route home, rather than at the filling station.

Usually, it takes place in one of a couple of familiar ways.

The refill is rushed outside Park View Community Primary Academy, because your dash lit up with a warning while the kids were dropped off.

After work, a bottle goes in on a drive near Energy Street.

Or your car is topped up in the car park outside Bradford Inn, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.

Rented vehicles, new motors, company cars, or the spare car in a family with both fuels: the least known vehicles get it the most.

Same slip, same first response — keep it off — anywhere you happen to be around Bradford or the rest of Greater Manchester.

## Started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Bradford?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then.

Through your filter, along the pipework, and — with any running time — into the high-pressure pump and every injector: that is how far it travels.

Watch for rough running, exhaust smoke, falling power, warnings on your dash, or a stall — coming back from Saxon Saint Park, say, or midway across Bradford.

Pull over when it is safe. Turn off. Keep the car off rather than restarting it to check.

Each start pulls more of it through.

If you were on the Mancunian Way, under 3 miles from Bradford, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere sensible instead of pressing on.

Hopping across Bradford to the car park by Manchester Tennis And Football Centre is one thing; driving towards Manchester, under 3 miles away, is another, since every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. So distance counts.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Wherever the vehicle came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush once your engine has been run.

Long-term damage is very unusual if it is caught early.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Bradford?

The car stays put, whether that is a road near Co-op Live, a driveway, a layby or a filling station around Bradford, and our van comes to it.

The work depends on three answers, which our technicians get first — what was put in, the amount, and if the motor has run.

Right there, the tank is then emptied, and both the polluted diesel and the urea leave at once.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing matters: the whole system is cleaned all the way through because residue will not flush away unaided.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

If the engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there.

Our equipment is explosion-proof, and so a busy filling station is no issue, and it is hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

The last step is to bleed your system on clean diesel.

Then our technicians fire it up and you head off, whether from a parking bay at Ardwick or a drive around Bradford.

Before we go, our engineers check it is running smoothly with new diesel in.

We do it all wherever the vehicle has ended up, and it never needs to go to a garage.

At the end, you are given the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a written report from the engineer.

## About Bradford, briefly

Bradford is a suburban area in Greater Manchester, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 55 metres, with Manchester city centre just 1.8 miles away. Bradford is characterized by its predominantly terraced housing stock, reflecting its historical development as a residential neighbourhood. Bradford is close to other nearby places such as Miles Platting, Beswick, and Collyhurst, and is home to a population of approximately 3005 residents.

## AdBlue drains across Bradford and Greater Manchester

AdBlue call-outs in Bradford are passed to vans that cover the towns near it — Miles Platting, Beswick as well as Collyhurst — and most of Greater Manchester beyond, throughout M postcodes.

Ring and check rather than guess if you are close to a county line, or anywhere awkward to pin down.

A van that comes to you fits Bradford, a residential suburb: there's no need to take the vehicle to us, since our engineers empty it on the spot, on a driveway, a side street, a parking area or a filling station.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Bradford

Each job differs, and so no single price would be fair.

The price changes first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that got in. After that it turns on where your car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight space behind National Squash Centre.

Before any figure, never after, every enquiry from Bradford begins with three questions: the liquid, the amount, and if the engine ran.

Those replies narrow the range right down to a single figure.

The quote is quoted on the call, before anyone sets off; settling up happens on the day, by card or over the phone, and nothing upfront.

As our engineer is travelling, dig out your policy: many include misfuelling.

## In Bradford and still alongside the car?

Leaving your vehicle alone is, then, the best thing open to you.

Keys out; engine and ignition off.

Tell us it's AdBlue, about how big an amount, and whether the engine ran, on 0333 366 0103. After that Petrol in Diesel handles it, in Bradford or anywhere in Greater Manchester.
